The Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev Jonas Benson Okoye says the transition of a firm Christian is a gain for the living as the soul will live eternally with God.

Bishop Okoye said this at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Maryland Amawbia, on March 1 during the Requiem Mass of late Ochiora Felicia Ifeonu Nwokoye (nee Ejianya), aka Ojemba Enweilo aged 90, mother of Sir Willie Nwokoye (Ibobo Amawbia), the Principal Secretary to the former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano.

The prelate delivering a heartfelt homily, emphasized that the church gave us LCM in achieving the kingdom of God, in addition to the 10 commandments, encouraging everyone to emulate the five wise virgins from the Bible by being prepared at all times.

The bishop shared his personal experience with the deceased, praising her strong faith during his time as parish priest of St. Matthew, Amawbia. He also commended the deceased’s eldest son, Willie, for his contributions to the progress of St. Matthew, including innovative ideas, financial support, and visiting retired priests home.

While urging the bereaved family to uphold their mother’s good legacies and remain committed to the Catholic faith,  Bishop Okoye also took the opportunity to commend former Governor Obiano for his notable achievements, particularly in infrastructure development, such as the airport, International Conference Centre, and human capital development.

Additionally, he praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his efforts in security and infrastructure development, encouraging Ndi Anambra to comply with government directives on security issues, aknowledging the contributions of other political leaders.

The prelate also commended Umeh for being an advocate for his people and a strong voice in Nigerian politics even as he praised the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon Chukwuma Okoye for his achievement so far.

Former Governor Obiano commiserating with the family of Sir Willie Nwokoye, highlighted their long-standing relationship which dates back to their time at St. Gerald’s Parish in Lagos. Interestingly, both Obiano’s mother and Willie Nwokoye’s mother passed away at the age of 90. Obiano expressed his gratitude to the numerous political leaders, friends, and supporters who attended the event to pay their respects and pray for the deceased.

Senator Victor Umeh praised former Governor Obiano for his notable achievements, including the ‘Ozoemezina’ honor for fallen heroes of the Biafran war, which he felt were overlooked. Umeh expressed confidence that Obiano’s accomplishments will eventually be recognized, emphasizing that nothing remains hidden forever.

Umeh also touched on the broader context of Igbo vindication, suggesting that God is slowly rectifying the suffering endured by the Igbo people over the past 60 years. He noted that the truth surrounding the Nigerian coup is gradually coming to light.
