On October 1, 1960, Nigeria took a historic step into nationhood, gaining independence from British colonial rule.
Sixty-six years later, the green-white-green flag continues to fly proudly, telling the story of a nation shaped by history, diversity, resilience and the determination of its people.
From the early years of independence to the Nigeria of today, the journey has come with remarkable milestones, difficult moments and important lessons.
Through changing governments, economic challenges, social transformations and technological advancement, Nigerians have continued to adapt, innovate and contribute to the growth of the nation.
In Anambra State, the story of Nigeria’s development is reflected in the daily lives of its people — in education, commerce, agriculture, technology, industry, healthcare and the determination of citizens to build communities where opportunities can thrive.
From the bustling markets of Onitsha to the industrial strength of Nnewi and the administrative capital, Awka, the state remains part of the larger Nigerian story.
As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, the celebration is also an opportunity to look beyond the past and consider the responsibility of the present generation.
The future of Nigeria is not shaped by government alone. It is also influenced by the choices of citizens — the young entrepreneur creating jobs, the teacher shaping minds, the farmer producing food, the professional serving with integrity and every citizen who contributes positively to society.
Sixty-six years after independence, Nigeria remains a work in progress — a nation with challenges, but also immense human and natural potential.
Independence therefore means more than remembering October 1, 1960. It is a reminder of the collective responsibility to build a peaceful, productive and prosperous nation for generations yet unborn.
As the Nigerian flag rises once again in celebration, the message is clear:
The journey continues.
The responsibility belongs to all.
And the future of Nigeria is a story that every generation has a role in writing.
Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria.
