‎The Anambra State Government, through the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), has commenced emergency flood control works to address persistent flooding affecting communities around Nibo and the Awka metropolis following heavy seasonal rainfall across the state.
‎
‎On Sept. 28, officials of the Authority, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ossy Onuko, inspected and supervised the ongoing intervention at Nibo, near the Old Governor’s Lodge, to ensure the timely and effective execution of the project.
‎
‎As part of the intervention, a heavy-duty Swamp Buggy has been deployed to the flood-prone area to create a large drainage channel aimed at diverting accumulated floodwater away from vulnerable residential areas and road infrastructure.
‎

‎The flooding had posed significant challenges to the Awka-Nibo Ring Road, making vehicular movement difficult and increasing the risk of water entering nearby homes, with potential damage to properties during periods of heavy rainfall.
‎
‎The intervention forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to address flooding within the Awka Capital Territory and protect lives, property and critical infrastructure from the effects of flooding.
‎
‎Residents of Nibo and adjoining communities have over the years experienced seasonal flooding, which often affects access roads, damages farmlands and creates environmental challenges during the peak of the rainy season.
‎
‎According to ACTDA, the newly created channel is expected to facilitate the free flow of stormwater to appropriate discharge points, thereby reducing the risk of flooding on roads and preventing further encroachment of floodwater into residential areas around the Old Governor’s Lodge.
‎
‎The Authority said the ongoing work reflects its commitment to responding promptly to environmental challenges and improving the safety and liveability of communities within the Awka Capital Territory.
‎
‎Work is progressing at the site, with engineers and equipment operators continuing with the intervention. ACTDA also reassured residents of its commitment to sustainable flood management and improved urban infrastructure across the capital territory.
