By Nonyelum Ezumezu

The Anambra State Government, under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has continued to implement policies and programmes aimed at stimulating economic growth, creating jobs and supporting small and medium sized enterprises across the state.

A key initiative is the Anambra State Small Business Agency (ASBA) programme, including the “One Community, One Product” initiative, which provides grants and access to low-interest loans for traders, artisans, entrepreneurs and small business owners. The programme is designed to promote local enterprise, expand business opportunities and strengthen community based economic development.

The administration is upgrading major commercial centres, including the Onitsha, Nnewi and Eke Awka markets, through improved infrastructure, better waste management, enhanced security and a more conducive business environment.

To drive economic activities, the government is investing in industrial parks, innovation and technology hubs, road networks, street lighting and logistics infrastructure, improving the ease of doing business while creating employment opportunities for artisans, contractors, transport operators, suppliers and other service providers.

In the agricultural sector, the Soludo administration is promoting the cultivation and processing of crops such as cassava, rice and oil palm, as well as fisheries development. The establishment of agro industrial clusters is expected to increase value addition, encouraging local manufacturing and generate jobs across the agricultural value chain.

The government has created employment opportunities through ongoing investments in road construction, erosion control and urban regeneration projects, engaging engineers, contractors, skilled workers, and other professionals.

Tourism and the creative economy are receiving renewed attention through projects such as Solution Fun City and the redevelopment of the Awka City Stadium, which are expected to attract visitors, host major events and create jobs in hospitality, entertainment, tourism and related services.

In addition, the state government is digitising key public services, including business registration, tax administration and land transactions, to improve efficiency, reduce bottlenecks and enhance the ease of doing business.

These initiatives reflect the Soludo administration’s commitment to building a resilient economy, supporting entrepreneurship, attracting investment, and creating sustainable employment opportunities for Ndi Anambra.

DIOCESE ON THE NIGER EXPLAINS SIGNIFICANCE OF PRIESTLY ORDINATION, ANNOUNCES DIACONATE ORDINATION

By Chika Obi

The Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion, has described priestly ordination as a divine calling through which God sets apart faithful men for the ministry of His Word and Sacraments, while announcing that 11 deacons will be ordained on July 19, at the Basilica of St. John’s Anglican Church, Fegge, Onitsha.

The Diocese, in a statement, said priestly ordination is firmly rooted in Holy Scripture and carried out in accordance with the Canons of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) to prepare ministers for preaching the Gospel, administering the Sacraments and strengthening the Body of Christ.

It explained that the ordination rite is built around three key commitments: the Profession of Faith, through which ordinands publicly affirm their belief in the Holy Scriptures; the Priestly Vows, committing them to a life of prayer, faithful preaching and sacramental ministry; and the Oath of Canonical Obedience, by which they pledge loyalty to the Bishop and uphold the doctrine, discipline and worship of the Church.

According to the Diocese, the high point of the service is the Laying on of Hands, during which the Bishop, assisted by priests, invokes the Holy Spirit upon the ordinands and commissions them into priestly ministry.

It added that the presentation of the Holy Bible, Paten and Chalice to each newly ordained priest symbolises the authority and responsibility entrusted to them to proclaim the Gospel faithfully and administer Christ’s Sacraments.

The Diocese further announced that the diaconate ordination of 11 candidates will take place during the service.

It stated that the Bishop on the Niger, the Rt. Rev. Owen Chiedozie Nwokolo, JP, FITH-PUA, will officiate and admit the candidates into the sacred ministry of the Church in accordance with Anglican tradition and practice.

ANAMBRA, TECHNOSERVE EXPLORE PARTNERSHIP TO ADVANCE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY, CIRCULAR ECONOMY

By Amaka Isikala

The Anambra State Ministry of Environment and TechnoServe have begun discussions on a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability, waste management, climate resilience and the circular economy across the state.

The discussions commenced on July 17 when a TechnoServe delegation, led by its Programme Director, Mr. Shadrack Guusu, paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, to congratulate him on his appointment, present the organisation’s programmes and explore areas of collaboration with the Ministry.

Speaking during the meeting, TechnoServe’s Project Manager, Mr. Daniel Oderinde, said the organisation is well positioned to support the Ministry’s proposed Environmental Academy through technical expertise, capacity building and environmental education.

He added that TechnoServe is prepared to provide technical blueprints, strengthen collaboration among government agencies, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders, as well as facilitate market linkages for recyclable plastics to boost waste recovery and promote a thriving circular economy.

Also speaking, the Programme Director, Mr. Shadrack Guusu, reaffirmed TechnoServe’s commitment to improving plastic recycling through community engagement, capacity building and measures that enhance the safety and productivity of informal waste collectors.

The organisation’s Business Adviser, Mr. Franklin Nwaribe, noted that TechnoServe has maintained a successful presence in Anambra State over the years and remains committed to aligning its interventions with the Ministry’s environmental priorities.

Responding, Dr. Aguiyi welcomed the proposed collaboration, stressing that partnerships should deliver measurable results and align with the state’s development priorities.

He reiterated the importance of institutionalising environmental education through the proposed Environmental Academy and called for support in curriculum development, technical training, provision of protective equipment and establishment of waste sorting facilities, particularly in schools, to nurture environmentally responsible citizens.

The commissioner urged TechnoServe and its partners, including the Coca-Cola Foundation, to expand interventions aimed at addressing flooding, gully erosion and plastic pollution.

He observed that while the state government continues to invest in tackling environmental degradation, sustainable solutions require public enlightenment, efficient waste management systems and the formalisation of the informal recycling sector.

Describing scavengers, scrap dealers and waste collectors as critical players in the circular economy, Dr. Aguiyi advocated structured training, safety education and technical support to improve their productivity and welfare.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to collaborating with development partners in advancing Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Environment and Urban Regeneration Agenda towards building a clean, green, livable and environmentally sustainable Anambra State.

Dr. Aguiyi thanked the TechnoServe delegation for its commitment to the state and expressed confidence that the discussions would lead to a long-term partnership with lasting environmental benefits for Anambra.

GOV. SOLUDO JOINS ISUOFIA TO BID EMOTIONAL ADIEU TO LATE MONARCH, IGWE LT. COL CHRISTOPHER MOGHALU

By Christian ABURIME

The atmosphere at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Isuofia, was a poignant blend of somber reflection and triumphant hope as Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, the Isuofia community, among others, gathered for the Pontifical Funeral Mass of their late traditional ruler, Igwe Col. Christopher Moghalu. The ceremony, presided over by His Eminence, Peter Ebere Cardinal Okpalaeke, served as a powerful tribute to a man whose life was defined by service, faith, and the preservation of culture.

Leading the tributes, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, eulogized the late monarch, describing him as an “Iroko” of the community whose eighty-eight years on earth were defined by profound impact rather than mere duration.

“We don’t just live, we live to matter. And when it is all done; it is not how long but how well,” Governor Soludo remarked. Reflecting on the late Igwe’s character, he added, “He was a man of his words—we share that similarity in common. He was a builder of people, community, church, faith, tradition, and culture.”

Governor Soludo particularly highlighted the late Igwe’s unwavering commitment to education, recalling, “What touched me the most was his devotion and commitment to education. When I adopted the Amorji Primary school, Isuofia, he visited me just to pay tribute and appreciate that commitment. It was then he related to me his personal efforts in encouraging people to commit themselves to education.”

Addressing the transition, the Governor offered a message of reassurance to the people of Isuofia: “God brought peace to Isuofia after twenty years, and I assure you we will have this transition in peace. The only way to remember this Iroko is to live up to those things he lived for.”

In his homily earlier, Cardinal Peter Ebere Okpalaeke emphasized the Christian perspective on transition, noting, “We don’t mourn as those without hope. Our hope rests in the victory of Christ over death. A baptized child of God journeys to heaven; he doesn’t die.”

The Cardinal lauded the late Igwe for his ability to harmoniously integrate his faith with his traditional role. “The departed traditional ruler shared a faith that did not fear culture. One can preserve our heritage without compromising his faith. He did it very well,” he observed.

Cardinal Okpalaeke further clarified the relationship between the church and traditional institutions: “The church does not seek to annihilate the traditional institution, but complements it. The church and society are not rivals; each group plays a distinct role for the development of human society.”

Addressing the upcoming succession, the Cardinal issued a pastoral appeal: “I call for peace in choosing his successor. Let the process never be a source of hatred. Preserve the peace he cherished; this is the greatest legacy or honour we will pay the late Igwe.”

The funeral also served as a testament to the monarch’s reach beyond his immediate domain. Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, a representative Major General Osita Okoye, emotionally credited the late Colonel for his professional trajectory. “What I am today, he contributed 90 percent. He saw to it that I entered the Nigeria Defence Academy in 1990,” he stated, highlighting the late Igwe’s role as a mentor and nation-builder.

As the community prepares for the formal Ofala ceremony scheduled for January 5, 2027, the overwhelming sentiment remains clear: Isuofia has lost a pillar of peace and progress, but his legacy of devotion to the common good will continue to guide the path forward.

COURT JAILS ONYE EZE JESUS FOR SIX YEARS, SLAMS ₦20 MILLION FINE OVER HOMELAND SECURITY LAW VIOLATIONS

By Emeka Ilozor

The Anambra State High Court has convicted controversial spiritual figure Onyebuchi Okocha, widely known as Onye Eze Jesus, sentencing him to six years in prison and imposing a ₦20 million fine for offences under the Anambra Homeland Security Law.

The conviction follows the Anambra State Government’s intensified campaign against alleged ritual-related activities, fraudulent spiritual practices, and the production of charms suspected of facilitating crimes such as kidnapping, internet fraud, and other criminal offences.

Onye Eze Jesus was among several prominent native doctors and spiritual practitioners arrested during a statewide security operation launched in February 2025 as part of efforts to curb criminal activities linked to ritual practices.

In delivering the judgment, the presiding judge ruled that anyone who falsely claims supernatural abilities to enrich individuals through prohibited means or prepares charms banned under the Anambra Homeland Security Law is guilty of an offence punishable by imprisonment and substantial financial penalties.

The ruling is regarded as another major step in the state government’s ongoing enforcement of laws aimed at tackling criminality and regulating unlawful spiritual practices across Anambra State.
