By Regina Igwebuike :

It was a sobering moment at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Enugwu-ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State on March 6 as priests, religious, parishioners, friends and well-wishers from all walks of life paid their last respect to Late Dr. Mrs Sabina Chinyere Onwuasoanya, which bore witness to the strong Christian faith of the matriarch.

Delivering the homily, Rev. Fr. MacBen Okeke, highlighted Dr. Onwuasoanya’s strong Catholic faith, which guided her actions and decisions. Her parents’ emphasis on Catholic doctrine and values instilled in her a sense of responsibility, compassion, and service to others.

Drawing from the life of the deceased, Fr. Okeke urged all to know their faith and stand by it, emphasizing that Dr. Onwuasoanya stood firm in her Catholic faith.

According to Rev. Fr. Bonaventure Nwankiti, Dr. Onwuasoanya was a corporate personality who embodied the values of being fully human, social, and spiritual. Her passing leaves a void, but her memory and legacy continue to inspire and motivate others to strive for excellence and service to humanity.

“Her legacy extends beyond her family and immediate community. Her dedication to education, community development, and social responsibility served as a model for young people, especially women, to emulate,” the cleric said.

Dr. Ify Echezona, President, Catholic Women’s Organisation (CWO) of St. Theresa’s Parish, Enugwu-ukwu, paid tribute to Dr. Onwuasoanya, describing her as a dedicated member who consistently supported the organisation. She noted that Dr. Onwuasoanya would often volunteer her time and resources, including financial assistance, to help the CWO during their annual August meetings, praying for God to grant Dr. Onwuasoanya eternal rest.

One of the deceased brother, Mr Raphael Kenechukwu Okpala, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Special Duties said that her sister’s passing has left a profound impact on her family, community, and colleagues. As the third daughter of her family, she took on the role of breadwinner at a tender age, supporting her siblings’ upbringing from primary school onwards. Her selflessness and dedication earned her the respect and admiration of those around her.

“As a lecturer at the Federal College of Technical, Umunze, Dr. Onwuasoanya rose through the ranks to become the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Her commitment to education and community development was evident in her work and interactions with others. Her insistent admonition on brotherly love and sharing defined her entire life,” Okpala said.

The deceased second daughter, Chizoba, while delivering a tribute at the graveside said, “Today, we gather to honor the extraordinary life of Dr. (Mrs.) Sabina Chinyere Onwuasoanya, a woman whose simplicity, excellence, and unwavering love left an indelible mark on everyone she met.

“Our mother’s selfless love, generosity, and guidance inspired countless lives. Her presence radiated warmth, laughter, and joy, touching the hearts of all who knew her. As a devoted mother, she nurtured, taught, and encouraged us to grow, shaping us into the people we are today.

“Her legacy extends far beyond her family, impacting generations to come. We find comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, resting in the loving arms of Our Heavenly Father.Though she may be gone, her love and spirit will continue to watch over and guide her husband, children, and loved ones. Heaven has gained an angel, and we have an eternal guardian in her.

“Rest in peace, dear Dr. Onwuasoanya. Your life, legacy, and memories will forever be in our hearts.”
