CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL INTERNET PROVIDERS: ANAMBRA GOVT MOVES TO PROTECT INFRASTRUCTURE AND ENSURE QUALITY DIGITAL ACCESS

In a decisive move to sanitize the state’s digital ecosystem, the Anambra State Government has launched a crackdown on unauthorized Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operating without approval across the state.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB) in collaboration with the Anambra State ICT Agency, comes on the heels of disturbing reports of indiscriminate road and sidewalk excavations, as well as the erection of unauthorized poles and infrastructure by some ISPs.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that several of these ISPs have bypassed the regulatory process, including the submission of deployment plans and obtaining requisite approvals.

Their activities not only deface public infrastructure but also pose serious risks such as data breaches and substandard service delivery.

According to Barr. Chike Maduekwe, Executive Chairman of ANSPPB, “This isn’t about shutting anyone out, it’s about ensuring everyone plays by the rules.

“If you want to offer internet services in Anambra, go through the proper channels.

“We will support those doing the right thing, but we will not fold our arms and watch people cut corners,” Maduekwe said.

The Anambra State Government stressed that this action is not meant to stifle innovation or discourage investment, but to enforce standards that protect residents and create a level playing field for all legitimate service providers.

The Managing Director, Anambra State ICT Agency, Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata (CFA), highlighted the importance of responsible internet deployment.

“The internet is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. Mr Governor has created an enabling environment by eliminating the Right of Way charges to encourage broadband expansion.

“However, providers must still engage the relevant agencies so we can ensure what is being deployed is safe and reliable,” he said.

Agbata noted that while the state is committed to encouraging more players in the tech space, the safety and trust of residents must come first.

“Our people deserve services from providers they can trust. We are committed to protecting our citizens while enabling fair competition in the tech ecosystem,” Agbata said.

The crackdown aligns with Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s administration’s vision of building a secure and digitally empowered Anambra where technology is used responsibly for the greater good.

The government assures that only ISPs duly registered with the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) and those who adhere to state-level regulatory processes will be allowed to operate going forward.
