The Anambra State Government has set December 2026 as the target for completing the regeneration of Onitsha Main Market, with more than 72 per cent of the work reportedly achieved, according to the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr Law Mefor.

Mefor disclosed this during an interview in his office at the Secretariat, Awka, on October 27, explaining that the project was designed to restore the market’s master plan, commercial identity and historical significance.

He described the regeneration as a comprehensive intervention to address the market’s fragmented layout and improve the organisation of trading spaces and supporting facilities.

According to him, the market’s existing condition has affected its image and commercial appeal, making a coordinated redevelopment necessary to restore its former standing as a major trading destination.

Mefor explained that the regeneration plan included the proper organization of shops, business spaces, parks and toilet facilities, with the objective of creating a more orderly environment for traders and customers.

He said the government intended to restore the market in line with its master plan, thereby improving its overall structure and strengthening its ability to support commercial activities.

The Commissioner stated that a committee overseeing the project had assessed the progress and expressed satisfaction with the work achieved, while identifying outstanding tasks that needed to be completed before the deadline.

He added that the government expected the regeneration to be completed by December 2026, signalling its intention to have the market ready for trading in the renewed environment within the stipulated period.

Mefor said the intervention was part of the administration’s wider development agenda, aimed at improving commercial infrastructure, restoring public confidence and strengthening Anambra’s economic activities.
