‎The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Onitsha, has secured accreditation to commence residency training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, marking another significant milestone in its growing commitment to specialist medical education and healthcare delivery.
‎
‎The accreditation was granted on November 2 by the Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria following an assessment of the department’s facilities, personnel, clinical services and capacity to provide postgraduate training.
‎
‎Speaking during the accreditation team’s visit, the Medical Director, Dr. Mercy Anugwu, expressed appreciation for the approval, describing it as a remarkable achievement and a testament to the institution’s steady progress.
‎

‎She commended the management and staff for their dedication and commitment to the development of the department, assuring the assessors that the necessary infrastructure, support systems and resources would be sustained to ensure the successful implementation of the programme.
‎
‎Anugwu reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to maintaining professional standards, complying with regulatory requirements and implementing the recommendations of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
‎
‎She noted that the accreditation would further strengthen specialist medical training at the facility and contribute to improving healthcare delivery through the development of qualified medical professionals.
‎
‎Leading the accreditation team, Professor A.A. Oluwale commended the department for its efforts towards meeting the requirements for the programme, explaining that the assessment covered infrastructure, staffing, clinical services and postgraduate training capacity.
‎
‎He encouraged the department to sustain its commitment to continuous improvement and maintain the standards required for effective residency training, noting that the accreditation exercise was designed to enhance institutional performance.
‎
‎The Head of Department, Dr. T.C. Chinemelu, appreciated the assessors for their professional evaluation and constructive observations, while acknowledging the management’s support and commitment to the department’s growth.
‎
‎Other members of the accreditation team included Prof. A.A. Oluwole, Prof. O.U.J. Umeora, Prof. A.Y. Isah and Prof. Robinson Onoh, alongside senior hospital officials who participated in the exercise.
‎The latest approval brings FMC Onitsha’s recent residency programme accreditations to four, following those in Family Medicine, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), and Paediatrics and Child Health, further consolidating the hospital’s position as a growing centre for specialist medical training.
