‎The reappointment of Dr. Afam Obidike as Commissioner for Health in Anambra State has been described as an endorsement of competence, continuity, and results-driven leadership in a sector critical to public welfare.
‎
‎Following his inauguration for a second term, Governor Chukwuma Soludo retained Dr. Obidike in office, signaling that performance, vision, and measurable impact remain central to governance in the state. Health sector stakeholders view the decision as a recognition of his contributions to healthcare reform over the past four years.
‎
‎A Consultant Anaesthetist and Public Health Expert, Dr. Obidike brought clinical expertise, administrative discipline, and a people-oriented approach to public office. Upon assuming office at the onset of the Soludo administration, he confronted longstanding challenges in the sector, including inadequate infrastructure, personnel shortages, limited access to maternal healthcare, and overstretched facilities, particularly in rural areas.
‎
‎A key achievement of his first tenure was the expansion and revitalization of healthcare infrastructure across the state. New secondary and primary health facilities were established in underserved communities, while several existing hospitals and primary healthcare centres underwent rehabilitation and equipment upgrades. These interventions broadened access to quality healthcare, especially at the grassroots level.
‎
‎Recognizing the importance of human resources, the state government, under his leadership, conducted one of the most extensive healthcare recruitment exercises in recent years. Over 1,000 health professionals, including doctors, nurses, consultants, laboratory scientists, pharmacists, and support staff, were employed to strengthen service delivery across general hospitals and primary health facilities.
‎
‎A defining initiative of his tenure has been the implementation of the free antenatal care and delivery programme, launched by the Soludo administration in September 2023. The programme provides free antenatal services, safe deliveries, and caesarean sections in government secondary and primary health facilities. According to official data, the scheme facilitated over 102,000 successful deliveries and more than 300 life-saving caesarean sections within 18 months. Health experts and community leaders credit the initiative with reducing maternal and infant mortality and increasing utilization of public health facilities.
‎
‎The programme has also improved access for vulnerable women who previously could not afford maternal care. In many rural communities, pregnant women now receive skilled medical attention without the burden of hospital costs, leading to safer childbirths and improved neonatal outcomes.
‎
‎Under Dr. Obidike’s leadership, Anambra State also recorded notable gains in disease prevention and public health coordination. Reports indicate that the state achieved one of the lowest malaria prevalence rates in Nigeria, attributed to intensified health campaigns, environmental sanitation, and the distribution of insecticide-treated nets.
‎
‎Congratulating, Dr. Frank Ifeaneme, and the Anambra State Hospital Management Board described the decision as a deserved recognition of “exceptional, selfless, and people-centred leadership.”
‎
‎Stakeholders have further commended his leadership style, describing it as accessible, collaborative, and service-oriented. His engagement with healthcare institutions, development partners, and frontline personnel has fostered a more coordinated and responsive health system. There are also calls for the expansion of telemedicine, broader health insurance coverage, and deeper partnerships to attract further investment into the state’s healthcare ecosystem.
‎
‎For many residents of Anambra State, Dr. Obidike’s reappointment represents the continuation of a healthcare agenda anchored on accessibility, professionalism, and the principle that governance should directly improve the lives of the people.
