A coalition of women-focused organizations, including the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Federation of Muslim Women in Nigeria, and National Council of Women Societies, staged a rally advocating for increased female representation in Nigeria’s political space.

The groups are pushing for a 34 percent quota for women in the National Assembly, which would translate to about 74 seats.

The rally, supported by the United Nations, featured a peaceful march through the streets before participants presented a formal petition to lawmakers.

During the event, speakers underscored the critical role women play in governance.

Amara Muojeke, Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, emphasized that meaningful national development cannot be achieved without adequate female representation.

Also speaking, Prof. Lilian Oby Orogbu, who represents Awka North and South in the Green Chamber, assured participants that the proposed bill would be presented before the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, Theresa Nnalue called on women to unite and actively support one another in pursuing political leadership positions.

The rally concluded with a strong call for inclusiveness, with participants stressing the importance of amplifying women’s voices in governance and decision-making processes.
