‎The Principal of Comprehensive Science and Technical College, Nawfia, Ven. Nnamdi Emendu, has on Oct 7 called for improved welfare and better working conditions for teachers, saying adequate support would enhance their effectiveness and overall productivity.
‎
‎Emendu made the call in commemoration of World Teachers’ Day, observed annually on October 5 and established by UNESCO 60 years ago. The 2026 celebration was held under the theme, “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status and Shaping Our Future.”
‎
‎In his message, Emendu advocated free medical treatment for teachers, provision of staff quarters and other incentives to enable them discharge their responsibilities effectively. He said well-equipped and properly remunerated teachers would be better positioned to give their best to the education sector.
‎
‎He also called on the Anambra State Government to consider allowing teachers who are willing and qualified to continue working for five years beyond the statutory retirement age of 60, as discussed at the Anambra State Teachers’ Forum with Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
‎
‎The principal further urged the government to recruit more teachers, particularly male teachers in trade-related subjects, to meet the demands of the new education curriculum, which includes areas such as livestock, horticulture, solar technology, carpentry and bricklaying.
‎
‎Emendu maintained that incentives and welfare packages should be equitable across all cadres of teachers, from nursery to tertiary institutions, stressing that the importance of their duties justified improved conditions of service. He also decried the shortage of male teachers and advocated increased recruitment to address the imbalance.
‎
‎He encouraged teachers to continually update their knowledge and skills to meet the demands of the evolving education system, particularly in the digital era. He therefore called for more in-service training programmes to equip teachers with relevant technological and professional skills.
‎
‎Speaking on the school’s Children’s Forum themed “Successful Studentship,” Emendu said the programme addressed important moral and character-building issues through the contributions of the school chaplain, Rev. Canon Chidozie Ifeanacho, and members of staff. He commended the Vice Principal Administration, Vice Principal Academics, students and other stakeholders for the success of the programme.
‎
‎The school’s Counsellor, Mrs. Monica Nwosu, also confirmed that the programme was successful, commending the organisers and participants for their contributions towards achieving its objectives.
