Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, is set to commence Residency Training in Family Medicine at its Medical Centre for newly graduated medical doctors, with plans to introduce residency programmes in other medical specialties in subsequent phases.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ugochukwu Stanley Bond Anyaehie, disclosed this on August 11, while inaugurating the University Medical Centre Board at the Council Chambers of the University.

Prof. Anyaehie charged members of the Board, chaired by Prof. Azuoma Lasbery Asomugha, to provide effective policy direction and support the transformation of the Medical Centre into a global-standard healthcare and training facility.

He explained that the primary responsibility of the Board was to provide policy direction without interfering with the day-to-day administration of the Centre.

According to him, the Board would be expected to take ownership of issues relating to projects, budgeting, development and strategic planning, stressing that once programmes and projects were captured in the budget, their implementation should be driven without unnecessary administrative bottlenecks.

The Vice-Chancellor said the proposed FMRP was part of the University’s efforts to make the Medical Centre not only a healthcare facility but also an important training arm of the institution.

He disclosed that qualified medical lecturers in the University had been appointed as consultants to the Medical Centre and urged the Board to develop a framework that would enable them to contribute regularly to clinical services and the training of residents.

Prof. Anyaehie also said the University was exploring opportunities to expand specialist services and attract additional professionals, with the ultimate goal of providing quality healthcare to members of the University community and the general public.

He further disclosed that the University had commenced the deployment of an electronic medical records system through an existing Memorandum of Understanding, noting that the initiative would improve efficiency, record keeping and healthcare management at the Centre.

The Vice-Chancellor announced plans to extend the University’s health insurance scheme to pupils in primary and secondary schools, saying the initiative would improve access to healthcare while strengthening the financial sustainability of the Medical Centre.

He also disclosed plans to establish additional medical facilities at strategic locations within the University community, including Agulu, Ifiteogwuari and Okofia, while existing mobile clinic arrangements would be reviewed.

According to him, the University was also considering the acquisition of electric vehicles to support mobile healthcare operations and reduce fuel costs.

Prof. Anyaehie expressed confidence in the ability of the Board to contribute meaningfully to the development of the Medical Centre, recalling his experience at another institution where strategic partnerships helped transform an underdeveloped medical facility into a modern healthcare centre offering specialist services to students and members of the surrounding community.

He said the experience demonstrated the importance of partnerships, strategic planning and sustainable healthcare financing in building a functional university medical centre.

The Vice-Chancellor therefore charged the Board to work collectively towards developing a Medical Centre that would provide quality and accessible healthcare while supporting teaching, training and research.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the University Medical Centre Board, Prof. Azuoma Lasbery Asomugha, expressed optimism that the inauguration would provide a new platform for the development of the Centre.

Prof. Asomugha recalled that previous administrations had made efforts to strengthen the Medical Centre but encountered challenges, particularly in accessing facilities and services at the teaching hospital.
