When Governor Chukwuma Soludo announced the appointment of Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, as the new Attorney General of Anambra State on March 24, it signaled more than a routine cabinet reshuffle. It marked a deliberate shift toward merit, professionalism, and a renewed focus on legal excellence in the state’s justice system.
At just 39, Nweke steps into the role with an impressive résumé that blends academic distinction, professional achievement, and administrative experience. A native of Nsugbe, his journey from a modest upbringing to the pinnacle of Nigeria’s legal profession reflects both discipline and ambition.
Educated at the University of Nigeria, where he earned his Law Degree in 2008, Nweke proceeded to the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Bar in November 2009. His early legal career began at the prestigious Chambers of Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN & Co. in Abuja, where he served during his National Youth Service and was subsequently retained.
In a career marked by rapid progression, Nweke rose to become Managing Solicitor of the firm within four years—a testament to both his legal acumen and leadership capacity. His work on several landmark cases earned him recognition within legal circles and contributed to shaping aspects of Nigeria’s legal jurisprudence.
Beyond litigation, Nweke distinguished himself in arbitration, becoming a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 2023. His academic pursuits also reflect a global outlook, with certifications from the University of Oxford in Project Risk Management and Harvard University in Contract Law—credentials that position him as a modern legal thinker attuned to international best practices.
His elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in September 2024 further cemented his reputation. Notably, he is regarded as the youngest SAN from Anambra State and among the youngest in the country—an achievement that underscores his exceptional career trajectory.
Before his current appointment, Nweke served as Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal Matters, a role he assumed in 2022. His transition from adviser to Attorney General suggests continuity in policy direction while also raising expectations for reform within the state’s justice sector.
His appointment is also historically significant. It is the first time in two decades that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria has been named Attorney General in Anambra State, the last being Nnoruka Udechukwu, SAN, who served between 2003 and 2006.
For many observers, this development reflects a conscious effort by the Soludo administration to prioritize competence over political patronage, especially in a position as sensitive as the office of the Attorney General. Legal analysts believe that Nweke’s blend of courtroom experience, arbitration expertise, and policy exposure equips him to tackle longstanding challenges in the justice system, including case backlog, legal reforms, and institutional efficiency.
From his early education at All Saints Premier Primary School and Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, to his rise within Nigeria’s legal elite, Nweke’s story is one of steady growth and purposeful achievement.
As he assumes office, expectations are high. For a state seeking to strengthen its legal institutions and deepen the rule of law, the emergence of Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, may well represent the beginning of a new chapter—one defined by professionalism, reform, and a reinvigorated justice system.
