SOLUDO ADMINISTRATION DELIVERS EXTENSIVE ROAD NETWORK TO BOOST CONNECTIVITY AND GROWTH
By Chizoba Njaka
The administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has embarked on one of the most extensive road construction programmes in the history of Anambra State, with over 750 kilometres of roads awarded for construction and more than 400 kilometres already completed and asphalted.
The projects, which cut across all 21 Local Government Areas, encompass major federal dual carriageways, flyovers, and rural road networks. Officials note that the scale of the undertaking is particularly significant as it is being executed without recourse to new state borrowing, relying instead on internally generated revenue and prudent fiscal management.
A defining feature of the programme is the adoption of high-durability construction techniques. Roads are being built using advanced stone-base and cement stabilization methods designed to withstand erosion and flooding, with an estimated lifespan of over 20 years.

Among the flagship projects is the 68-kilometre Amawbia-Nise-Agulu-Ekwulobia-Uga Federal Highway dualization, which provides a direct link between Anambra and Imo State. In Ekwulobia, a major flyover, a modern bus terminal, and an associated road network are under construction to alleviate persistent traffic congestion.
Erosion and flood control measures have also been incorporated into the programme. Extensive drainage systems have been constructed along vulnerable sections, including the Ekwusigo axis and the Isu/Igbo river corridors, to mitigate the state’s ecological challenges.
The administration has equally prioritized the integration of urban and rural areas. Previously neglected locations such as Okpoko in Onitsha and the Umunya-Awkuzu corridor have undergone significant road rehabilitation, thereby improving accessibility for residents and businesses.
According to the government, the road infrastructure initiative is aimed at opening up communities, reducing travel time, and stimulating economic activity across the state.
Stakeholders within and outside Anambra State have acknowledged that Governor Soludo’s achievements in infrastructure development are commendable and worthy of emulation. They expressed optimism called other state governments to adopt a similar model to advance effective governance and sustainable development.
