The Anambra State Government has issued a set of regulations governing market operations to traders across all markets in the state. The regulations were presented to 41 representatives of the major markets within the state at the Government House, Awka.
Addressing the market representatives, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Tobechukwu Nweke, read out the provisions of the law. He stated that under Section 3(3) of the law, each represented market is designated as an Area of Significant Economic and Security Interest. Consequently, each market shall require special attention and supervision by the Governor in his capacity as the Chief Security Officer of the state, and shall not be managed by any individual or authority without the Governor’s consent.
Barr. Nweke further noted that Section 3(4) of the law mandates market executives to maintain a register of all persons conducting business within the market. The register must include the name, address, phone number, nature of business, and location of each trader. Upon request by the state or local government, the register or any information contained therein must be provided within seven days.
The commissioner stated that the market regulations apply to all persons trading in the markets and shall be forwarded to the Mayor of the relevant local government area upon demand. The 41 major markets have accordingly been declared Areas of Significant Economic and Security Interest.
