‎The Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Hon. Echezona Anazodo, has expressed concern over the persistent indiscriminate disposal of refuse in parts of the council area and warned that offenders would be sanctioned accordingly.
‎
‎During an inspection of waste management operations, Hon. Anazodo stated that the practice undermines the council’s efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment in Nnewi. He observed that despite the recent deployment of 10 tricycles for waste collection, some residents and traders continued to dispose of refuse in drains, road medians, and other unauthorized locations.
‎
‎“It is unacceptable that while the government is committing resources to ensure timely evacuation of waste, a few individuals are undermining these efforts through reckless dumping,” he said.
‎
‎The chairman disclosed that enforcement teams had been directed to monitor identified hotspots and apprehend defaulters. He reiterated that residents were required to use only approved branded waste bags and to deposit them at designated collection points for pickup by the council’s waste operatives.
‎
‎Hon. Anazodo urged community leaders, market associations, and landlords to support sensitization campaigns and to report incidents of illegal dumping within their domains.
‎
‎He appealed to residents to cooperate with the waste management initiative, emphasizing that a clean environment reduces the risk of disease outbreaks and enhances the overall quality of life. “The equipment procured must be fully utilized, and our streets must not be converted into dumpsites. Every resident has a responsibility to restore environmental order in Nnewi,” he added.
‎
‎The council stated that it would continue to combine enforcement measures with public education to ensure sustained compliance with approved waste disposal practices.
