The Shanahan University Teaching Hospital, St. Charles Borromeo, Onitsha, recently received a National Universities Commission (NUC) delegation on an official assessment of its adherence to regulatory standards and collaboration with Shanahan University. Led by Mr. Patrick Ukah, the delegation was formally received by the Chief Executive Officer, Rev. Fr. Izunna Okonkwo, and members of the management team.
During the visit, the NUC delegation inspected the hospital’s facilities and assessed its operations, with emphasis on its contributions to medical training and academic integration with the university.
The delegation also commended the hospital for its steadfast commitment to high standards in healthcare delivery and medical education, and described its partnership with Shanahan University as an exemplar in teaching hospital administration.
Speaking on the hospital’s capacity, Fr. Okonkwo described the facility as “the largest and fastest growing private university teaching hospital in the West African sub-region,” noting its extensive specialties, including cardiology, ophthalmology, urology, neurosurgery, neurology, orthopedic surgery, nephrology, gynecology and obstetrics, and family medicine. He added that ongoing collaborations with medical consultants from the United States and Hungary are improving service delivery, promoting knowledge exchange, and advancing international best practices.
He reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to sustained collaboration with Shanahan University and the NUC, stating that such synergy is essential to enhancing healthcare delivery and expanding access to quality medical services. The visit marks another significant milestone in the hospital’s pursuit of excellence in clinical services and medical education, consolidating its position as a leading healthcare institution in the region.
