The Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) of Anambra State on Thursday conducted a major operation against illegal drug activities in Onitsha, leading to the public destruction of hard drugs valued at more than ₦80 million.

This development was disclosed in a statement issued by the agency’s Media Aide, Amb. Karen James. According to her, the exercise attracted significant public attention and highlights SASA’s strong resolve to combat drug trafficking and reduce crime across the state.

During the operation, the Managing Director of SASA, Hon. Monday Nwokoye, reaffirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance policy toward drug abuse and touting. He warned that anyone involved in the sale, distribution, or use of illicit drugs would face strict legal action.
“Drugs must be eradicated in Anambra. Anyone found culpable will be decisively dealt with,” he said.

Hon. Nwokoye revealed that the destroyed drugs were confiscated from several locations, including Nsugbe, Umuchu, Ojoto, Oba, Nkpor, Nkwelle Ezunaka, and the wider Onitsha area. He stressed that the destruction process was final, ensuring the seized substances would not return to circulation.

He described drug dealers as a serious threat to public safety, noting that drug abuse often contributes to crimes such as theft, violence, and general insecurity. He urged residents to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that community involvement is key to maintaining safety.

The SASA boss also praised the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for his continued support in strengthening security efforts. He assured residents that the agency remains committed to eliminating drug abuse, touting, and other criminal activities.

SASA reiterated its call to the public to remain vigilant, stressing that collective action is essential in building a safer and healthier Anambra State.
