‎The Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has welcomed the 1985 Alumni Class of Queen’s Rosary College (QRC), Onitsha, expressing the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with the group on initiatives aimed at promoting the welfare and empowerment of women and children.
‎
‎Mrs. Onyekesi spoke on Aug. 21, when the Global President of the QRC 1985 Alumni, Dr. Emilia Nwokolo, led members of the class on a courtesy visit to her office at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka. The commissioner expressed appreciation for the alumni’s commitment to supporting one another and contributing to the wellbeing of women and children in society.
‎

‎She described the group’s interest in partnering with the ministry as encouraging, noting that one of her major priorities was to empower women through training, skills acquisition and other initiatives that would promote economic independence and improve their livelihoods.
‎
‎According to her, partnerships with organisations committed to advancing the welfare of women and children would complement government’s efforts and expand opportunities to positively impact vulnerable members of society.
‎
‎Earlier, Dr. Nwokolo said the visit was aimed at familiarising members of the alumni with the Commissioner, congratulating her on her appointment and expressing their support for her efforts to improve the welfare of women and children. “When we see women in power, it is a thing of joy and something to be proud of,” she said.
‎
‎She explained that the 1985 class was marking its 40th anniversary and had resolved to use the occasion not only to celebrate their shared history but also to give back to society through meaningful outreach programmes and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
‎
‎Dr. Nwokolo said that, having graduated from QRC in Anambra State, the alumni considered it appropriate to extend some of its anniversary activities to the state while exploring possible areas of collaboration with the ministry. She disclosed that, as part of the anniversary outreach programme, the group planned to visit hospitals and support women and children in need, including assisting with some medical bills.

The Alumni President also revealed plans to visit correctional facilities as part of efforts to give back to society and make a positive impact on vulnerable members of the community. Mrs. Onyekesi, in turn, reaffirmed her commitment to empowering women and strengthening partnerships that would contribute to improving the lives of individuals and families across the state

‎The meeting provided an opportunity for both the Ministry and the QRC 1985 Alumni to identify areas of mutual collaboration, with the alumni expressing its willingness to support initiatives targeted at women and children.
