‎The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie, has received Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer at the University, following his successful completion of the prestigious Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health Programme at the Global Brain Health Institute, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
‎
‎Prof. Anyaehie received Dr. Okoye on August 20 and commended him for his academic accomplishment, resilience and steadfast commitment to professional excellence despite personal and professional challenges. The fellowship, which spanned Aug. 2025 to Aug. 2026, brought together scholars, researchers and practitioners from diverse parts of the world with a shared commitment to advancing equity in brain health.
‎
‎Dr. Okoye’s successful completion of the programme is particularly noteworthy following the physical assault he suffered in an incident involving a female student, which attracted significant public attention. Despite the experience, he remained committed to his academic and professional responsibilities and successfully completed the highly competitive international fellowship.
‎
‎The Atlantic Fellows programme equipped participants with knowledge and skills in the clinical and biological foundations of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, social determinants of health, research analysis and epidemiology, law and ethics, health policy, health economics, creativity, equity and brain health, as well as leadership development.
‎
‎The programme combined physical and remote learning with clinical and lived-experience sessions, case studies, seminars and workshops conducted in collaboration with leading institutions and organisations. As part of the fellowship, Dr. Okoye participated in an intensive mentorship programme and developed pilot proposals with potential for future funding and implementation.
‎
‎His achievement adds to the growing record of international academic accomplishments by scholars of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and reflects the capacity of the institution’s academics to contribute to global discussions on health, research and human development.
‎
‎Receiving Dr. Okoye, Prof. Anyaehie praised his courage, resilience and academic accomplishment, describing the fellowship as a significant achievement for both the lecturer and the University. The reception also highlighted the University’s recognition of staff members who continue to distinguish themselves through academic excellence and professional commitment despite personal and professional challenges.
