As the world marks the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the need to protect young people from the dangers of substance abuse remains a shared responsibility for societies across the globe.

The fight against drug abuse goes beyond addressing the consequences of substance misuse. It requires a proactive approach built around prevention, awareness, mentorship, education, skills development, and creating opportunities that enable young people to discover and maximize their potential.

For Nigeria, with one of the largest youth populations in the world, investing in young people is not only a social responsibility but a key pathway to sustainable development. When young people are equipped with relevant skills, empowered with opportunities, and given platforms to thrive, they are better positioned to contribute positively to society.

In Anambra State, the Soludo-led administration has continued to emphasize human capital development and youth empowerment as key components of its development agenda. Initiatives such as the 1Youth 2 Skills programme are designed to equip young people with practical skills that can improve employability, entrepreneurship, and economic independence.

Similarly, platforms such as the Solution Innovation District (SID) reflect the administration’s focus on creating an environment where young people can engage with technology, innovation, and emerging opportunities, preparing them for the demands of a changing global economy.

These interventions represent an important part of the broader solution to youth-related challenges. Beyond preventing negative influences, society must actively create positive pathways where young people can channel their energy, creativity, and ambition into productive ventures.

However, government efforts alone cannot succeed without the support of families, schools, religious institutions, community leaders, and citizens. Parents and guardians must remain actively involved in the lives of their children, schools must continue to promote positive values, and communities must provide support systems that encourage responsible choices.

In today’s digital age, continuous awareness is also essential. Young people are exposed to different influences, making guidance, mentorship, and access to credible information more important than ever.

The fight against drug abuse is ultimately a fight for the future. By combining prevention with empowerment, awareness with opportunity, and responsibility with action, we can build a generation that is healthy, skilled, productive, and ready to contribute to the growth of Anambra State and Nigeria.

Drug abuse prevention is not just about saying no to harmful choices; it is about building a society where young people have better choices to say yes to.
