The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has commended the swift response of police operatives and members of the Abatete community, which led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man, Pascal Ogbogu, over the alleged murder of his 56-year-old father in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary information indicated that the incident occurred on the evening of Aug. 25, when the suspect allegedly attacked his father with a machete before fleeing the scene.
Following a distress call, operatives of the Eziowelle Police Division, in collaboration with the victim’s family members and personnel of the Abatete Vigilante, swiftly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the deceased lying lifeless in a pool of blood, with a deep machete wound inflicted on his throat.
The deceased’s body was thereafter taken to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Meanwhile, the suspect, who allegedly fled the scene after the attack, was apprehended in the early hours of Aug. 26 following a coordinated search operation by the Police and Abatete Vigilante personnel. The arrest was also facilitated by timely information and cooperation from members of the community, who assisted the security operatives in tracing and locating the suspect.
CP Oji Ama commended the victim’s family, members of the community, police operatives and vigilante personnel for their cooperation and prompt intervention. He emphasised that active community participation and timely sharing of information are vital to effective policing.
The commissioner further underscored the need for sustained collaboration between security agencies and local communities, noting that such partnerships are crucial to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring swift responses to security incidents.
He sympathised with the family of the deceased and directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation and a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the incident. CP Oji Ama assured the family and the general public that the investigation would be handled professionally, thoroughly and diligently in accordance with the law. He added that the suspect would be subjected to due process upon completion of the investigation.
