The immediate past President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Anambra State Chapter, Chief Obi Chukwuemekalum Udodeme, has urged Ndigbo to make informed choices in the 2027 general elections, advising them to vote for candidates who are accessible, accountable and committed to the welfare of their constituents.
Chief Udodeme made the call on Aug. 25, during an interview at the Onitsha South Local Government Secretariat, shortly after the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) campaign rally ahead of the Aug. 29 local government elections in Anambra State.
He stressed the importance of electing representatives who would remain close to the people, regularly consult with their constituents and understand the challenges confronting their communities. Such leaders, he noted, would be better equipped to present the needs and development priorities of their people at the National Assembly and push for their inclusion in the national budget.
The former Ohanaeze president described the 2027 elections as an opportunity for Ndigbo to correct past mistakes and make their votes count. He urged voters to carefully scrutinise candidates, particularly those who are accessible and have demonstrated a genuine understanding of the needs of their constituencies.
Chief Udodeme also warned against vote buying, urging Ndi Igbo not to exchange their conscience for temporary financial benefits. “Don’t sell your conscience for N20,000,” he appealed, stressing that whatever amount offered during an election could not compare with the consequences of poor leadership over a four-year tenure.
On the recent voter registration exercise, Udodeme expressed satisfaction with the number of people who showed interest in registering but raised concerns over the difficulties reportedly experienced by some residents at the Onitsha South Local Government registration centre.
He alleged that technical challenges and repeated breakdown of registration machines prevented some residents from completing the process. He described the 2027 election as an important opportunity for citizens to strengthen democratic participation and elect leaders they believe can deliver effective representation and meaningful development.
Speaking on the August 29 local government election, Hon. Udodeme called on residents to come out en masse to participate in the mayoral and councillorship polls across Anambra State.
