Christians across the world marked Palm Sunday, signaling the beginning of the Holy Week with processions, and reflections on the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

At Annunciation Catholic Church, Awka, the faithful gathered in large numbers to commemorate the sacred event, waving palm fronds in remembrance of Christ’s entry, where He was welcomed with shouts of “Hosanna.”

In his introductory remarks, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Raph Agbanu, reminded the congregation of the spiritual significance of the celebration, noting that the journey of Holy Week leads to Christ’s Passion, Suffering, and eventual Death on the cross.

“As we hold our palms today, let them be not just symbols of praise, but also signs of our commitment to follow Christ faithfully,” he said. He further reflected on how the same crowd that welcomed Jesus later turned against Him.

Delivering the homily, Fr. Agbanu highlighted key messages of Palm Sunday, including humility, genuine faith, trust in God’s plan, and committed discipleship. He explained that despite being humiliated, insulted, and ridiculed, Jesus remained focused on His divine mission without distraction.

He urged the faithful to remain steadfast in their faith and to keep their focus on Christ, whom he described as “the beginning and the end.”

Quoting from Hebrews 12:1–2, he encouraged the congregation to remain strong in their spiritual journey, emphasizing the importance of looking unto Jesus as the author and finisher of life.

The cleric advised worshippers to place their trust in God rather than in man, adding, “It is better to take refuge in God than to trust in man. Focus on Him in whatever you do.”

The celebration also featured a special thanksgiving for Mr and Mrs Paulinus and Mary Olisamah (Agbogidi 1of Akiri-Ogidi) who marked their 80th and 62nd birthdays respectively.

The couple expressed gratitude to God for the gift of life, good health, and many years of blessings, while praying for more fruitful years ahead.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Arch Stephen Olisamah appreciated the parish priest and parishioners for their love, prayers, and support toward the family.
