The Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (ONICCIMA) has expressed deep concern following a recent fire outbreak at the Plumbing and Sanitary Wares Market, Bridgehead, Onitsha.
In a press release signed by its President, Mr. Chinedu Nwonu, the Chamber described the incident as tragic, noting that it occurred barely a year after a similar devastating fire at Ifejika Street in the Main Market on March 28, 2025.
According to ONICCIMA, the recurrence highlights the persistent vulnerability of markets across Anambra State and underscores the urgent need for improved fire prevention and control systems.
The fire reportedly destroyed goods worth millions of naira, dealing a significant blow to traders and disrupting commercial activities in the area.
Eyewitness accounts indicated delays in emergency response, raising concerns about the capacity and efficiency of fire services in Onitsha.
The Chamber therefore called for a shift from reactive to proactive measures. It urged the Federal and State Governments to equip and decentralize fire service units across major markets, enforce strict compliance with fire safety regulations, and invest in functional fire hydrant infrastructure.
ONICCIMA also advised business owners to install fire safety equipment, such as alarms and fire extinguishers, and to conduct regular electrical inspections.
Market associations were further encouraged to establish emergency response committees and organize routine fire drills.
Describing the incidents as a wake-up call, the Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to strengthen safety systems and safeguard lives, property, and the economic stability of Anambra State.
