After eight years of dedicated service, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, has officially handed over to Dr. Ezeaka Augustine Uwaeme, bringing his tenure to a close.
As the pioneer MD, Dr. Onyemaechi played a key role in building ASHIA from the beginning and helping people understand the importance of health insurance. When the agency started, many residents were not familiar with how it works. Today, that has changed. Under his leadership, over 330,000 residents have been enrolled, making healthcare more affordable and accessible to families across Anambra State.
One of his most notable achievements is the introduction of the Adoption Model. This initiative allows individuals, groups, and organisations to pay for health insurance on behalf of those who cannot afford it. Through this effort, many elderly people, women, children, and low-income earners now have access to medical care without the stress of high hospital bills.
The Adoption Model has received strong support from people within Nigeria and those in the diaspora, showing a shared commitment to helping others and improving community health.
During his time in office, Dr. Onyemaechi also introduced digital systems that made registration easier, improved record-keeping, and helped the agency serve people more efficiently. These changes made the process smoother for enrollees and healthcare providers alike.
Beyond Anambra State, he worked with other health insurance leaders across Nigeria to improve the system and support the goal of Universal Health Coverage.
At his send-off party, staff of ASHIA were visibly emotional as they appreciated him for his guidance, leadership, and support throughout his years in office. Many described him as a leader who was committed, approachable, and focused on building a strong team. They also wished him well in his future endeavours.
As he steps down, Dr. Onyemaechi leaves behind a stronger and more organised ASHIA, a growing number of enrollees, and impactful initiatives like the Adoption Model that continue to make a real difference in people’s lives.
His time in office will be remembered not just for the numbers, but for the many families who can now access healthcare with greater ease and peace of mind.
