Chief Executive Officer of Pure Smiles Dental Clinic, Onitsha, Dr. Uzoeze Okoli, has underscored the importance of proper oral health care, urging the public not to neglect the mouth, teeth, gums, and related structures.
Speaking during a health sensitization session, Dr. Okoli described the mouth as the “gateway to the body” which often reveals much about an individual’s overall health. He expressed concern that, despite being easy to maintain except in cases of accident or trauma, oral health is frequently ignored.
“One can maintain healthy oral care throughout life, yet many people wait until irreversible damage occurs before seeking help. At that point, treatment costs for conditions such as tooth extraction become significantly higher than preventive care,” he said.
He emphasized that preventive care is cheaper, safer, and more effective and advised for basic daily practices including brushing in the morning and at night, and flossing daily instead of using toothpicks.
The CEO also recommended that individuals visit a dentist at least once a year to sustain optimal oral health.
“Do not wait until diseases like advanced gum disease, mouth ulcers, tooth decay, or other mucosal conditions develop before consulting a dentist,” he added.
