The Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Esther Chinyere Onyekesi, has expressed concern over the increasing incidents of gender-based violence, sexual abuse, and unhealthy family conflicts, warning that these challenges pose a serious threat to the well-being of society.
Hon. Onyekesi made the remarks while receiving the President-General of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) Women Wing, Ikenga, Mrs. Ezenweke Faustina, alongside the President of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO), St. Anthony’s Parish, Ikenga, Mrs. Iloabanachi, and members of their delegations during a courtesy visit.
The Commissioner emphasized the need for collective responsibility in addressing gender violence, sexual abuse, and persistent family disputes, noting that no meaningful societal progress can be achieved where such issues are allowed to thrive.
She highlighted the efforts of the administration of the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, in collaboration with the First Lady, Dr. Nonye Soludo, to strengthen families through various empowerment programmes targeted at women, youths, and vulnerable groups. According to her, these initiatives are aimed at creating opportunities for productive engagement, reducing idleness, and easing the economic pressures that often contribute to tension and conflict within households.
She noted that promoting peaceful homes free from violence, abuse, and constant disputes would enhance social stability, reduce crime, and encourage healthier relationships among citizens.
Earlier in their remarks, Mrs. Ezenweke and Mrs. Iloabanachi said their visit was to congratulate Hon. Onyekesi on her appointment and to express solidarity with her as she assumes office. They prayed for divine wisdom, strength, and guidance for the Commissioner, expressing confidence in her ability to serve the people of Anambra State diligently and impartially.
The delegation assured Hon. Onyekesi of their continued support and prayers, describing her appointment as a source of pride to the women and wives of Ikenga. They further commended Governor Soludo and Dr. Nonye Soludo for entrusting her with the responsibility of serving the state in her new capacity.
