Women leaders in Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State have pledged their unalloyed support and cooperation for the newly inaugurated Mayor of the council, Hon. Chief Peter Ikechukwu Mofunanya, during a courtesy visit to the council headquarters on October 8. The visit aimed to strengthen their relationship with the new administration and promote grassroots development.
Speaking during the visit, the Onitsha South APGA Woman Leader, Mrs. Ijeoma Ezekesi, thanked God for Mofunanya’s emergence as mayor and congratulated him on his assumption of office. She pledged the women’s continued support throughout his tenure.
Ezekesi expressed optimism that the administration would create opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully to grassroots development, emphasising the importance of inclusiveness, consultation and collective responsibility in governance.
Also speaking, Hon. (Mrs.) Nnedi Ndukamma expressed confidence that the new administration would bring positive changes to the council. She described Mofunanya as a committed party member who understands the importance of carrying everyone along, adding that his leadership would promote development and strengthen unity among residents.
In her remarks, Mrs. Oguadimma Ifeoma expressed hope that the council would record greater achievements under the new administration. She also prayed for wisdom, good health and divine guidance for the mayor as he steers the affairs of the council.
Responding, Mofunanya thanked the women leaders for their visit and show of solidarity, assuring them of his support and commitment to an open-door policy, particularly on matters concerning women’s welfare, empowerment and participation in local government administration.
The mayor emphasised that unity remained a major priority of his administration, noting that meaningful progress could only be achieved when political, traditional, religious, youth, women and community leaders worked together in the interest of the people.
He listed his administration’s priorities to include people-oriented governance, improved sanitation and environmental cleanliness, grassroots infrastructure development, support for traders and small businesses, youth empowerment, women’s development, improved security and stronger community engagement.
Mofunanya described leadership as a collective responsibility and pledged to collaborate with stakeholders across the council to attract meaningful development. The visit ended with renewed assurances of cooperation between the women leaders and the mayor, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to peace, unity, good governance and sustainable development in Onitsha South.
