ONITSHA SOUTH MAYOR URGES CHILDREN, YOUTH TO SHUN VICES, EMBRACE PATRIOTISM

The Mayor of Onitsha South LGA, Mr. Emeka Orji, has called on children and youths to desist from all forms of vices including cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, drug abuse, prostitution, and thuggery, saying such acts jeopardize their future and national development.

The mayor made the call today during the Children’s Day celebration held at the Onitsha South Local Government Secretariat. He was represented by the Head of Local Government Administration, HLGA, Mrs. Ebele Ezechukwu.

In his welcome address, Mr. Orji noted that although the Child Rights Law has been passed, enforcement remains weak. He said this has fueled the continued ill-treatment of children and youths across the country.

“Violence against children ranging from incessant beating, maltreatment, bullying, child abuse, child trafficking, child labour, kidnapping, insurgency and terrorism are common issues threatening the lives of children in Nigeria. These issues require priority attention since children and youths represent the generation that will determine the future of our country.”

The mayor added that negligence by some parents, guardians and caregivers also contributes to the dangers facing children. He said the Federal Government, in collaboration with state and local governments, is making concerted efforts to curb the vices and inculcate patriotism and loyalty to the nation in children as leaders of tomorrow.

Mr. Orji commended Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for his investments in the education sector, including provision of learning facilities, prompt payment of workers’ salaries, and creation of a conducive learning environment.

Also speaking, Comrade Ngozi Alaebob, NULGE President, Onitsha South, urged the children to be responsible and take their studies seriously.

Highlights of the event included a march past and distribution of Checker’s Choco Tea to students.
