Tree planting has commenced across the 17 wards of Onitsha South Local Government Area following the launch of a council-wide greening initiative by the Executive Mayor, Hon. Emeka Orji, on June 29.
The initiative is aimed at increasing tree cover, promoting environmental sustainability, and creating a cleaner, healthier and more attractive environment across the local government. As part of the first phase, each ward received tree seedlings for planting in strategic public and residential locations.
In Odoakpu Ward 1, the Councillor representing the ward, Rt. Hon. Franklin Uchenna Onyeke, led the exercise and commended Mayor Orji for initiating what he described as a timely intervention to enhance environmental protection, provide shade, and improve the overall appearance of Onitsha South.

Speaking during the exercise, Rt. Hon. Onyeke said the project reflects the Mayor’s commitment to building a healthier, greener and more beautiful local government.
The tree planting exercise in Odoakpu Ward 1 commenced at key locations, including Pioneer Primary School, O’Connor Primary School, Clinton Street and St. John Street.

Residents and school authorities who witnessed the exercise applauded the initiative and pledged to nurture the trees to ensure they grow to maturity.
Officials disclosed that the exercise will continue in the coming days to cover more streets, schools and public spaces within Odoakpu Ward 1.
The council-wide greening project is also ongoing in the remaining 16 wards of Onitsha South, where ward councillors and other stakeholders are leading similar tree planting exercises as part of efforts to improve the local environment and promote sustainable urban development.
