The Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Hon. Nweze Tony Nwora, on Friday led residents in the statewide Community Clean-Up and Drainage Desilting Exercise, mobilising stakeholders across the council area to clear blocked drainage channels and improve environmental sanitation ahead of the rainy season.

The exercise, conducted from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., was carried out in compliance with the directive of Governor Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo as part of a coordinated state-wide effort to reduce the risk of flooding and promote cleaner, healthier communities.

Hon. Nwora said the initiative focused on clearing blocked drainage channels, desilting gutters, and restoring a clean environment across Onitsha North. He urged residents, shop owners, school proprietors, landlords, and other stakeholders to clean their immediate surroundings, remove silt from nearby drainage channels, and refrain from dumping refuse into gutters to ensure the free flow of rainwater.

The Onitsha North Local Government Council deployed tippers and sanitation personnel to evacuate sand, silt, and waste collected from designated points across the council area.

The Mayor commended community leaders, market associations, youth groups, and religious organisations for mobilising residents and ensuring broad participation. He reiterated that environmental sanitation is a shared responsibility and expressed confidence that the exercise would contribute significantly to keeping Onitsha North clean, healthy, and better protected against flooding.
