‎
‎As the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) commences nationwide, beneficiaries of a free registration initiative in Onitsha North Local Government Area have begun sitting for the examination, expressing appreciation for the opportunity provided to them.
‎
‎The initiative was sponsored by the Councillor representing Ward 10, who also serves as Chairman of the Main Market, Chijioke Michael Okpalaugo.
‎
‎The programme provided free registration for selected youths within the constituency as part of efforts to promote education and empower young people at the grassroots level.
‎
‎The beneficiaries, drawn from Omagba Phase 1 and 2 as well as the Anglican Road axis, were carefully selected to ensure inclusiveness.
‎
‎ The sponsorship covered the cost of registration with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), thereby reducing the financial burden on parents and guardians.
‎
‎Speaking on the initiative, Hon. Okpalaugo emphasized that education remains a vital instrument for community development.
‎
‎He noted that his dual role as a public office holder and market leader places him in a position to directly impact the lives of the people, especially the youth.
‎
‎The Chairman, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Onitsha North, Okwy Mmaduekwe, commended the initiative, describing it as a commendable step toward grassroots empowerment and human capital development.
‎
‎Some of the beneficiaries, who spoke ahead of their examinations, described the gesture as timely, noting that it has strengthened their hope of gaining admission into tertiary institutions despite economic challenges.
‎
‎Community members have equally lauded the initiative and called on other leaders, particularly those in strategic positions within markets and local communities, to emulate such impactful interventions.
‎
‎The initiative highlights the critical role of community and market leadership in complementing government efforts toward youth empowerment and educational development in Anambra state.
