The Okpoko Community Women’s Wing on Aug. 30, held its annual August meeting and welcoming ceremony for community leaders, with a renewed call for greater support for women’s welfare and community development.
The event, led by the Community Woman Leader, Lolo Vera Ohika, alongside her Secretary, Mrs. Ngozi Ejezi, the Okpoko Director-General of the Princess Stella Odua Campaign, Hon. Chimezie Osigwe, and other executives, brought together women and community stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting the community.
The gathering featured health education, family-building lectures, prayers and other activities aimed at promoting peaceful homes, strengthening family relationships and preventing domestic violence. Participants also discussed the important role of women in community growth and development, while acknowledging the contributions of okpoko women to the advancement of the community.

The August meeting provided an opportunity for the women to interact with community leaders, deliberate on pressing issues affecting them and seek practical solutions to challenges confronting their families and the wider community.
The women appealed for assistance in improving sanitation, supporting indigent and less-privileged women, providing soft loans and other forms of financial assistance, addressing youth drug abuse and organising skill-acquisition programmes to empower women economically.

Dignitaries at the event included Sen. Princess Stella Odua, APGA Senate candidate for Anambra North; Rt. Hon. Somto Nkem Udeze, who was represented; and the Mayor of Ogbaru, Hon. Kenneth Akwuobi. Others were Rt. Hon. Chu-Chu Onyema, Hon. Chukwunonso Noble Igwe, Hon. Nnamdi Ifejika, Hon. (Mrs.) Easter Chinyere Onyekesi and Sir Charles Ezeokafor.
Speaking at the event, Sen. Odua pledged to support the women in addressing their challenges and promised to support them with gifts, including bags of rice, wrappers and other items. The women expressed satisfaction with the successful gathering and commended Lolo Ohika and her executive members for their leadership and commitment to the welfare of women in Okpoko.
