Parents, a recent graduate and a prospective student have welcomed the approval granted to Federal Polytechnic, Oko, to offer a National Diploma (ND) programme in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the 2026/2027 academic session, describing it as a significant step towards expanding technology driven education and preparing young people for emerging career opportunities.

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) approved the programme alongside similar programmes in 21 other institutions. The approval was conveyed in a letter dated October 13, signed by the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Professor Idris M. Bugaje.

Reacting to the development, a parent, Dr Frederick Obi, described the approval as encouraging, expressing optimism that the programme would equip students with relevant technological skills and broaden their employment and career prospects.

Another parent, Mr Clement Chimobi, said introducing Artificial Intelligence at the National Diploma level would help prepare young people for the growing demands of the digital economy. He, however, emphasised the need for adequate facilities, qualified instructors and hands on training to ensure that students acquire practical skills.

For Simeon Isidore, a recent Computer Engineering graduate, the programme presents an opportunity to deepen students’ understanding of emerging technologies, stimulate innovation and prepare them for opportunities in the evolving technology sector.

Similarly, a prospective student, Stephen Egbu, expressed excitement about the approval, describing it as an opportunity to pursue his interest in Artificial Intelligence and acquire specialised knowledge for future technological development.

The development aligns with Federal Polytechnic, Oko’s efforts to expand technology-focused education under the leadership of its Rector, Dr Chioma Irene Awuzie, while strengthening the institution’s contribution to Nigeria’s digital transformation.

According to the approval details, each of the institutions has an approved capacity of 80 students, with Federal Polytechnic, Oko, listed at number 14. The NBTE also requested the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to accommodate the approved institutions.

The introduction of the programme is expected to broaden students’ access to specialised technology education and support the development of skilled manpower in a field increasingly shaping industries, businesses and public services.

As Artificial Intelligence continues to influence how people work, learn and solve problems, the programme offers an opportunity for the institution to contribute to building a new generation of technology professionals equipped to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities.
