The President-General of Ogbaru Main Market, Onitsha in Anambra State Chief Patrick Ndubuisi Ochiogu, has presented a scorecard of his administration’s achievements, amidst criticisms from opposition voices within the market.
Ochiogu who is also a dedicated, core or “I die here” faithful of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) party in Ogbaru Local Government especially, in Ogbaru 1 constituency made this assertion during a guided tour of his completed projects, highlighting key initiatives such as improved security measures, modern toilet facilities, fire extinguishers, borehole rehabilitation, facilitating reconstruction of the damaged Sakamori Road through the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), in collaboration with Anambra State Government, the HERO apprenticeship scheme and loan grants to traders.
His other notable achievements also include installation of solar-powered lighting across the market, the repayment of #11 million outstanding debts to Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) inherited from previous administrations, removal of shanties to improve network connectivity and ease vehicles movement, raising of shop structures to a height of 12 ft to enhance accessibility. He initiated the evacuation of refuse heaps on Obodoukwu Road and clearing of drainages within and around the market to prevent flooding that previously damaged traders goods.
His administration also introduced an annual celebration for traders aged 70 and above, presenting them with cash gifts and other items in recognition of their contributions to the growth and peace in the market.
“I swore to change the narrative about market leadership. I promised to be truthful to traders who elected me and reposition the market to meet standards obtainable in other markets,” he added.
Traders, including Mr. Romanus Ibegbu, praised the market boss leadership, awarding him titles like Oputa Ife-adi and Ochoudo, symbolizing peace. His hometown Oraukwu conferred him the chieftaincy title Madu-Adiche.
Ochiogu emphasized restoring peace through collaboration with security agencies, such as the Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigerian Army, urging critics to verify his administration’s achievements independently.
Supporters said his emergence reflects popular will and providence, describing him as focused and purposeful.
