Awkuzu football team claimed a narrow but well-deserved 2–1 victory over Ogbunike (Okpala Igueado) in a lively Oyi Youths League 2026 fixture held at Umunya Central School Field yesterday.
The match, which kicked off at exactly 4:00 PM, attracted a large turnout of football enthusiasts and community supporters from across Oyi Local Government Area.
Sponsored by Hon. Mrs. Maureen Gwacham, the encounter delivered excitement as both sides displayed impressive skill, determination, and sportsmanship.
Awkuzu opened the scoring early in the first half, taking advantage of defensive lapses from the Ogbunike side. After the break, Ogbunike responded with renewed energy, finding the equalizer through a well-executed goal that lifted the spirits of their supporters.
Despite the pressure, Awkuzu regained momentum and struck the decisive goal late in the second half, sealing a hard-fought 2–1 win.
Speaking after the match, Awkuzu Captain, Mr. Ebuka Okposi, expressed delight over the victory, noting that discipline and adherence to their game plan were key to their success. The team’s coach, Mr. Anthony Oscar Nnanyelu, commended his players for their determination and resilience.
On the other side, Ogbunike coach, Mr. Chidiebere Obiesi of Osile Ogbunike, acknowledged his team’s effort but admitted that costly mistakes affected the outcome. He assured supporters that the team would regroup and improve in subsequent matches.
A spectator, Mr. Emma Onenu, praised the quality of play, describing the match as a true reflection of grassroots football and the immense talent within Oyi communities.
