The campaign against indiscriminate refuse dumping in Nnewi North Local Government Area has been strengthened with the commissioning of 10 new tricycles for waste collection.
The tricycles were unveiled on May 19, 2026, at the council secretariat by Hon. Echezona Anazodo. He stated that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to keep Nnewi clean, protect public health, and restore environmental order in the commercial city.
The compact tricycles are designed to access streets and neighborhoods that larger refuse trucks cannot easily reach, enabling faster and more efficient waste evacuation.
Addressing waste management officers and operators at the ceremony, Hon. Anazodo urged them to ensure prompt response and consistent service delivery. He emphasized that the equipment should be fully utilized and that residents deserve a cleaner and healthier environment.
He also appealed to residents of Nnewi to support the scheme by disposing of waste responsibly, using only approved branded waste bags, and avoiding the dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorized locations.
The deployment of the tricycles aligns with the broader agenda of improving sanitation and urban management in Nnewi North, while also creating employment opportunities for tricycle operators and sanitation workers.
Hon. Anazodo expressed appreciation to Chief Cletus Ibeto for sponsoring the programme and called on other stakeholders to support the initiative. “Nnewi must be clean, and together, we can achieve it,” he said.
