The newly appointed Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Henry Arinze, has pledged to improve staff welfare and working conditions, while urging employees to remain committed and productive in the discharge of their duties. The commissioner made the pledge during a meeting with staff of the Ministry of Housing on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka.
Mr Arinze explained that the meeting was convened to identify challenges affecting staff and to explore solutions that would enhance productivity and support the ministry’s objectives. He also expressed his intention to develop a ministry where construction industry professionals within the civil service could undertake most of the consultancy work currently outsourced to external firms.
The Commissioner stressed the importance of training and capacity building for staff. He promised to provide the necessary tools and a conducive work environment to ensure effective service delivery.
He noted that the ministry was currently implementing several key projects, including a proposed mass housing scheme for civil servants and the planned construction of staff quarters, as part of initiatives introduced by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
He further assured staff that no employee would be excluded from the ministry’s development plans. He said efforts were underway to improve office conditions through the provision of electricity, procurement of laptops and other office equipment, periodic in-house training for all staff, and the installation of 12-hour internet services.
Also speaking, the Director of Architecture, Obiora Ilouno, thanked the commissioner for engaging with staff and pledged the ministry’s loyalty and full support in achieving its set goals.
Earlier in the interactive session, the Director of the Quantity Survey Department, Edison Obiayor, along with other staff members, outlined several challenges impeding their performance. They expressed concern over the persistent power supply deficiencies and the inadequate provision of essential office equipment, including computers, printers, and photocopying machines.
