The Executive Chairman of Njikoka Local Government Area(LGA), Hon. Dr. Ikechukwu Okakpu (OKD Jnr.), has described his mandate as a solemn responsibility entrusted to him by the people, pledging to build a peaceful, secure and prosperous council area where residents can feel the impact of government.

Dr. Okakpu said this in an exclusive interview on Oct. 7, where he spoke on his mandate, the state of the council, his administration’s priorities and his vision for the future of Njikoka.

Reflecting on the significance of his mandate, the mayor expressed gratitude to the people for their confidence in his leadership.

“For me, this mandate is a great responsibility and a trust from the people of Njikoka. I am deeply grateful for the confidence they have placed in me, and I do not take it for granted. I see this office as an opportunity to serve, listen to our people and put their interests first,” he said.

On the state of the Local Government when he assumed office, Dr. Okakpu acknowledged the contributions of previous administrations while identifying areas requiring greater attention.

“I met a Local Government that has benefited from the contributions of successive administrations. There are areas where we need to do more, particularly in infrastructure, security, youth development, education, sanitation and basic services. Our responsibility now is to build on what is already there, consolidate the gains and address areas that require further attention,” he noted.

The mayor said his administration’s vision is centred on practical development, inclusive governance and programmes that directly respond to the needs of residents.

“My vision is to build a peaceful, secure, united and prosperous Njikoka where people can feel the impact of government. Our approach is simple: listen to the people, work with the people and remain accountable to them,” he explained.

According to him, the administration will prioritise security, infrastructure, youth and women empowerment, education, agriculture and local economic development.

Explaining the philosophy behind his administration’s slogan, “Together, We Shall Build a Better Njikoka,” Dr. Okakpu emphasised that sustainable development requires the collective efforts of government and the people.

“One person or one group cannot build Njikoka alone. Government has a role, but so do our traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, women, professionals, businesses and Ndi Njikoka in the diaspora. That is the meaning of the slogan—bringing our strengths together and working towards a safer, cleaner, more prosperous and united Njikoka,” he said.

The mayor reiterated his commitment to inclusive governance and collaboration with traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women, professionals, businesses and other stakeholders in driving sustainable development across the six towns of Njikoka.

His administration, he added, would continue to listen to the people and pursue practical initiatives aimed at improving lives and strengthening development at the grassroots.
