By Mokwugwo Ogochukwu

‎The Mayor of Dunukofia Local Government Council, Chijioke Ozumba, Esq., has urged women in Nawgu and Ukwulu communities to prioritise education, responsible parenting, environmental sanitation and community security. Ozumba made the call on August 17 while participating in the 2026 Community August Meetings held by women in the two communities.

‎The visits were part of his administration’s ongoing engagement with women across Dunukofia during the 2026 Community August Meetings. He had earlier attended similar meetings in Umudioka and Umunnachi. Addressing the women, Ozumba described them as critical partners in family and community development, commending their resilience, unity and contributions to the social and economic advancement of their communities.

‎He particularly urged mothers and women leaders to ensure that every child, especially the girl-child, remains in school and has access to quality education.
‎According to him, educating children is an investment in the future of families and the wider community. The Mayor also stressed the importance of discipline, integrity, respect and good character in raising children, noting that academic education should be complemented by sound moral values to produce responsible citizens and future leaders.

‎On environmental sanitation, Ozumba encouraged the women to make cleanliness a daily responsibility by ensuring proper waste disposal, maintaining clean surroundings and regularly clearing drainage channels to prevent diseases and promote healthy living. He further called for greater security consciousness among residents, urging the women to collaborate with town unions, vigilante groups and other security stakeholders in protecting their communities.

‎He advised them to promptly report suspicious activities and provide useful information that could assist security agencies in preventing crime. Ozumba commended the people of Nawgu and Ukwulu for the warm reception accorded him and his entourage and for the peaceful and orderly conduct of their August Meetings.

‎He also commended the Presidents-General, women leaders and residents of both communities for their commitment to unity and peaceful development. The Mayor prayed for continued peace, progress, unity and prosperity in Nawgu and Ukwulu, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to grassroots engagement and partnership with the people.

‎In separate gestures of appreciation, the two communities presented the Mayor with agricultural produce. Ozumba expressed gratitude for the gifts, describing them as a reflection of the communities’ hospitality, industriousness and productivity.

‎The Mayor was accompanied by the Deputy Mayor of Dunukofia Local Government Council, the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Dunukofia Congress of Councillors, Supervisors, government officials and other stakeholders.

OMAMBALA LINE BUS TERMINAL SET TO TRANSFORM ONITSHA’S BRIDGE HEAD, EASE TRAFFIC CONGESTION

By Chinyere Nwoye

Onitsha is set for a major transportation facelift as construction advances on the Omambala Line Inter-State Bus Terminal at Bridge Head, a project stakeholders say will redefine the commercial gateway to Anambra State.

The terminal, being championed by the Managing Director of Omambala Line Limited, Chief Chukwuemeka Ofozoba, is sited on 15 plots of land near Hero Junction, Bridge Head. Officials describe it as more than just another motor park, but a bold intervention aimed at tackling traffic congestion, indiscriminate roadside loading, and environmental disorder that have long plagued the area.

According to Ofozoba, the facility is designed to accommodate about 300 vehicles at a time entering Onitsha from the Asaba axis. It will feature dedicated sections for different vehicle categories, a large cargo bay, spacious parking area, and comfortable passenger waiting lounges.

To ensure smooth traffic flow, the terminal will have three gates – one entrance and two exit points. Solar-powered lighting, security posts, modern toilet facilities, a drainage system, and a grand entrance gate are also part of the design to give travelers comfort and safety.

Bridge Head serves as the first point of entry into Anambra for thousands of commuters and traders daily. City planners and transport operators say the new terminal could take a significant number of buses and tricycles off the roadsides, thereby improving orderliness and the overall outlook of the gateway city.

Beyond transport, the project is expected to boost the state’s economy. A structured terminal will provide government with a more organized platform for revenue collection and regulation, reducing street-level clashes between officials, motorists and traders.

Transport experts note that if completed and properly managed, the Omambala Line Terminal could serve as a model for how private investment can complement government efforts to modernize urban infrastructure.

“Onitsha is a city of commerce, movement and opportunity. Its transportation infrastructure should reflect that energy. When transportation is organized, commerce moves better. When the gateway is clean, the city speaks for itself.”

Community leaders and residents have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a welcome development that deserves support to ensure it is delivered to completion.

For Onitsha and Anambra State, the message from the developers is clear: the solution is here.

COMMENTARY ON WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

By Lilian Ezejiegu

August 19 is World Humanitarian Day, an occasion to recognise humanitarian workers and communities supporting people affected by emergencies, disasters, displacement and other difficult circumstances worldwide.

For Government, humanitarian action goes beyond emergency response. It involves building systems that protect vulnerable citizens, strengthening communities and ensuring people can access essential services during challenging periods.

In Anambra State, the responsibility for protecting lives aligns with the government’s broader development agenda, which places security, social protection and human capital development among important governance priorities.

Effective humanitarian response requires cooperation between government agencies, emergency responders, community leaders, development partners and citizens, especially when communities face disasters or situations requiring urgent intervention and support.

Government agencies responsible for emergency management must remain prepared to respond quickly, while citizens also have responsibilities to provide accurate information and cooperate with authorised responders during emergencies.

The occasion therefore highlights the importance of preparedness, responsible governance and community participation in protecting lives and reducing the impact of humanitarian emergencies.

Through policies and development programmes, government can address vulnerabilities by improving infrastructure, healthcare, education, environmental management and social support systems that strengthen community resilience.

As Anambra continues implementing its development agenda, protecting vulnerable people and creating safer, more liveable communities remain essential elements of people-centred governance and sustainable development.

World Humanitarian Day reminds us that government and citizens share responsibility for building compassionate communities where people receive timely assistance, dignity and protection whenever difficult circumstances arise.

AKPO COMMUNITY LEADER COMMENDS SOLUDO’S MARKET REGENERATION POLICY, SEEKS RELIEF MARKETS

By David Okpala/Stella Okpala

The immediate past President General of Akpo Development Association (ADA), Nze Henry C. Dim, has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the ongoing regeneration of markets across Anambra State, describing the initiative as necessary for restoring order and improving the state’s commercial environment.

Nze Dim made the remarks during an interaction with Information Officers at Akpo, Aguata Local Government Area (LGA), on Aug. 17.

He said the governor’s interventions in infrastructure, education, healthcare, economic development, security and human capacity development had contributed to the transformation of the state.

According to him, the market regeneration programme was particularly significant because it seeks to restore major markets to their planned layouts and improve the conditions under which traders operate.

“The sweetest among them is this market regeneration, where international markets like Onitsha Main Market are being returned to their original master plan,” he said.

Nze Dim acknowledged that the exercise had caused difficulties for some traders, particularly those affected by demolition and relocation activities, but argued that the long term benefits of a more organised market system should be considered.

“I am personally thankful to him, although it is affecting some people negatively. Yet, we need to swallow the bitter pill for the inconveniences associated with congestion in our markets to go,” he said.

He appealed to those affected by the exercise to remain patient, noting that the objective should be to create a more orderly and functional commercial environment that benefits the wider population.

However, Nze Dim urged the state government to consider establishing relief markets for traders displaced by the regeneration exercise.

He said such facilities would provide temporary or alternative trading spaces for affected businesses and could help reduce congestion in existing markets, while also addressing some of the social and security concerns associated with displacement.

The community leader also praised the Governor’s approach to governance, urging the administration to sustain policies aimed at improving infrastructure, public services and economic opportunities across the state.

ANAMBRA CULTURE MINISTRY PARTNERS HERITAGE & CULTURE AFRICA TO PROMOTE IRI JI FESTIVAL

By Obianuju Umeh

The Anambra State Ministry of Culture, Entertainment and Tourism has partnered with Heritage & Culture Africa to promote the Iri Ji Grand Finale, an initiative aimed at preserving Igbo cultural heritage while using the New Yam Festival to promote tourism and community development.

The partnership was highlighted during the launch of the Iri Ji Grand Finale project in Awka, which featured panel discussions on culture, heritage and their role in development.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Mr. Udoji Amedu, urged young people in the state to embrace and promote the cultural values of Ndi Anambra.

He described Iri Ji as an important cultural tradition across Igbo communities, marking the beginning of the yam harvest season, reflecting the agricultural heritage and identity of the people.

Mr. Amedu said the initiative was in line with the Ministry’s cultural development plans, adding that arrangements were underway for a broader state wide celebration involving the 21 Local Government Areas(LGA) and communities across Anambra.

Also speaking, the traditional ruler of Obosi Kingdom and Chairman of the Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, described yam as a crop of great cultural and economic significance in Igbo society.

He recalled that in the past, a farmer’s wealth was often measured by the size of his yam barn, reflecting the importance attached to the crop.

Igwe Iweka  urged parents to teach their children the Igbo language, encouraging its use at home, stressing that language remains an important part of preserving cultural identity and passing heritage from one generation to another.

The Convener of the Iri Ji Grand Finale and Founder of Heritage & Culture Africa said the initiative was designed to create structures that would support community development, with culture and heritage serving as a foundation.

He stressed the need to move beyond simply celebrating cultural traditions to developing and using them to create opportunities for communities.

According to him, after individual communities conclude their New Yam Festival celebrations, the grand finale will bring people together to celebrate the season collectively and showcase the richness of Igbo culture.

The project, launched in August in Awka with panel discussions, will continue with media campaigns, farmers’ engagement, cultural tours and talent hunts before culminating in a three day grand finale in November.

The organisers said the activities are expected to provide a platform for cultural expression, agricultural engagement and the promotion of Anambra’s tourism potential.

KIDNEY HEALTH: WHY PARENTS SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO CHILDREN’S DIETS

By MaryAnn Chukwuma

Kidney disease remains an important health concern, with unhealthy dietary habits and frequent consumption of highly processed foods and sugary drinks raising concerns about long term health in many households.

Bread, biscuits, noodles, sausages, pastries, canned foods, salty snacks and carbonated drinks are common parts of many diets. While these foods can be consumed occasionally, frequent intake of products high in sodium and added sugars can contribute to health problems, including high blood pressure, a major risk factor for kidney disease.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases identifies packaged, processed and fast foods as important sources of dietary sodium, while the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends reducing sodium consumption as part of a healthy diet.

For parents and guardians, the concern extends to children because eating habits developed early in life can influence health as they grow.

When children routinely consume soft drinks, sweets, biscuits, processed meats, noodles and other packaged foods, such choices can gradually become normal parts of their daily diet. Parents can help by making water, fruits, vegetables and balanced home-prepared meals more regular choices.

This does not mean that eating bread occasionally or having a soft drink automatically causes kidney failure. The concern is excessive consumption of salty, sugary and highly processed foods, particularly when they regularly replace more nutritious alternatives.

It is also important to note that kidney disease in children is not caused by diet alone. Genetic conditions, infections, congenital urinary abnormalities and other medical conditions can also affect kidney function. Therefore, parents should not assume that dietary changes alone can prevent or treat kidney disease.

Adults and children should be monitored for possible warning signs such as persistent swelling, changes in urination, blood in the urine, unusual tiredness or other unexplained symptoms. Anyone experiencing such symptoms should seek medical attention promptly.

Families can support kidney and overall health by reducing excessive salt and added sugars, choosing fresh or minimally processed foods more often, drinking adequate water and checking nutrition labels when buying packaged products.

Adults should also pay attention to conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity, and seek appropriate medical care and regular health checks.

The kidneys often perform their vital functions without obvious symptoms until problems become serious. Protecting kidney health therefore requires a combination of healthier lifestyle choices, responsible nutrition and early medical attention when warning signs occur.

For families, the goal should not be to eliminate every processed food, but to make healthier choices the norm and highly processed foods occasional rather than everyday staples.

IBBSS 2026: ANAMBRA BEGINS STEP-DOWN TRAINING FOR FIELD TEAM AHEAD OF STATEWIDE SURVEY

By Obianuju Isima

The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has commenced a step-down training for field personnel ahead of the 2026 Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Survey (IBBSS), strengthening preparations for quality data collection to guide the state’s HIV response.

The training, which began on Aug. 17, is part of preparations for the statewide survey, which is expected to generate critical evidence to support HIV programming and health planning in Anambra State.

Speaking at the training, the State Coordinator for IBBSS 2026, Donald Obi, said the survey would generate important data on key populations, including population estimates, behavioural and health risks, HIV positivity rates and barriers to accessing healthcare services.

He noted that the two-month field exercise forms part of the IBBSS being implemented across 12 Global Fund-supported states in Nigeria.

Obi urged the field personnel to maintain high standards of professionalism, confidentiality and accuracy throughout the exercise, while ensuring that participants are treated with dignity and respect.

He commended the Executive Director/Project Manager of ANSACA, Dr. Nkem Okeke, for providing leadership and creating an enabling environment for the successful implementation of the exercise, acknowledging the support of WACPHAD and other development partners.

Obi further appreciated the Anambra State Government under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo for its continued support for healthcare programmes across the state.

The findings from IBBSS 2026 are expected to provide stronger evidence for targeted HIV interventions, improve access to services for key populations and support more effective health planning and decision-making in Anambra State.

ANAMBRA MOVES TO RECLAIM ONITSHA MAIN MARKET, DEMOLISHES STRUCTURES ON JOHNSON STREET

By Claribel Udah

The Anambra State Government has intensified enforcement of physical planning regulations at Onitsha Main Market with the demolition of structures along Johnson Street.

The exercise, carried out on AUg. 15 by officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, targeted structures identified as contravening approved physical planning and development requirements.

The ministry said the enforcement was aimed at reclaiming improperly utilised spaces, improving the physical environment of the market and ensuring that developments within the commercial hub conformed with approved planning standards.

It said the exercise was also part of the government’s broader efforts to restore order and support the ongoing regeneration of the market.

According to the ministry, the action would help create a safer and more organised environment for traders, customers and other users of the market.

It stressed that the successful regeneration of the market required strict compliance with physical planning regulations as the government works to improve its appearance, functionality and overall organisation.

The ministry urged traders, developers, property owners and other stakeholders operating within the market to obtain the necessary approvals and comply with planning requirements to avoid enforcement action.

The state government said sustained enforcement and compliance would remain critical to achieving its objective of creating a cleaner, safer and better planned commercial environment in Onitsha.
