COMMENTARY ON WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

By Lilian Ezejiegu

August 19 is World Humanitarian Day, an occasion to recognise humanitarian workers and communities supporting people affected by emergencies, disasters, displacement and other difficult circumstances worldwide.

For Government, humanitarian action goes beyond emergency response. It involves building systems that protect vulnerable citizens, strengthening communities and ensuring people can access essential services during challenging periods.

In Anambra State, the responsibility for protecting lives aligns with the government’s broader development agenda, which places security, social protection and human capital development among important governance priorities.

Effective humanitarian response requires cooperation between government agencies, emergency responders, community leaders, development partners and citizens, especially when communities face disasters or situations requiring urgent intervention and support.

Government agencies responsible for emergency management must remain prepared to respond quickly, while citizens also have responsibilities to provide accurate information and cooperate with authorised responders during emergencies.

The occasion therefore highlights the importance of preparedness, responsible governance and community participation in protecting lives and reducing the impact of humanitarian emergencies.

Through policies and development programmes, government can address vulnerabilities by improving infrastructure, healthcare, education, environmental management and social support systems that strengthen community resilience.

As Anambra continues implementing its development agenda, protecting vulnerable people and creating safer, more liveable communities remain essential elements of people-centred governance and sustainable development.

World Humanitarian Day reminds us that government and citizens share responsibility for building compassionate communities where people receive timely assistance, dignity and protection whenever difficult circumstances arise.
