The Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has commended the Archbishop of the Onitsha Archdiocese, Valerian Maduka Okeke, for his consistent acts of kindness toward inmates at the Onitsha Correctional Centre.
The commendation was delivered during the Archbishop’s pastoral visit to St. Maximilian Kolbe Chaplaincy at the facility as part of activities marking the Easter celebration.
Represented by the Anambra State Controller of Corrections, Anslem Ike, Nwakuche acknowledged the Archbishop’s significant contributions to the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates. He noted that the prelate’s efforts have greatly enhanced the moral and spiritual atmosphere of the correctional centre.
He also appealed to the Archbishop to continue remembering him in his prayers, just as he does for others, while praising his unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of inmates.
Nwakuche also applauds Archbishop Okeke
longstanding tradition of celebrating major Christian festivities, including Christmas, Easter, and his birthday with inmates at the Onitsha Correctional Centre throughout his episcopal ministry.
Okeke in his homily titled “Understanding the Resurrection,” emphasized that the resurrection of Jesus Christ represents victory for all humanity. He explained that the apostles initially struggled to comprehend the resurrection until the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost enlightened them.
He urged the faithful to embrace belief without doubt, referencing the story of Thomas, who only believed after physically confirming Christ’s resurrection. He further encouraged inmates and worshippers alike to cultivate strong faith rather than relying solely on physical evidence.
In his remarks, the Chaplain, St. Maximilian Kolbe Chaplaincy, Rev. Fr. Bartholomew Okpalaugo, described Archbishop Okeke as a “father figure” to inmates, praising his continuous support and generosity.
He noted that the Onitsha Correctional Centre remains uniquely privileged, as it is the only facility the Archbishop visits three times annually, noting that inmates consistently benefit from his visits.
Responding, Archbishop Okeke assured the Controller-General of his prayers, saying that he remains committed to praying for him and others in his role as Grand Patron of Nigerian prisoners.
As part of the visit, the Archbishop donated several items to inmates, including toothpaste, toothbrushes, tissue paper, biscuits, rice, laundry soap, Easter cakes, and other essential supplies.
