The National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), through the Anambra State Operations Coordinating Unit (ANSOCU), has delivered life jackets to support the safety of enumerators working in riverine communities across Anambra State.
The intervention is expected to improve the safety and confidence of field officers who rely on waterways to access hard-to-reach communities, particularly during the rainy season.
Receiving the items at the ANSOCU office in Awka on Aug. 24, the Anambra State Coordinator, Mr George Asoegwu, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and NASSCO management for providing the safety equipment.
Asoegwu described the gesture as timely, noting that concerns about waterway transportation during the rainy season could affect the ability of enumerators to reach riverine communities and carry out data collection and updates.
“Our enumerators working in riverine areas basically depend on waterways for transportation, and some of them are afraid to go there, especially in this rainy season,” he said.
He explained that limited access to these communities could affect data generation and updates, potentially making it difficult for residents to benefit from social intervention programmes targeted at vulnerable populations.
“With these life jackets now, we will be confident to mobilise more enumerators to these places to generate and update more data,” Asoegwu added.
The life jackets were delivered to the ANSOCU office in Awka by a NASSCO administrative staff member, Mr Michael Akpan.
The provision of the safety equipment is expected to strengthen field operations and enable enumerators to reach more riverine communities safely, supporting more accurate and up-to-date data for social protection planning and interventions.
