‎The Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, has urged students to prioritize academic excellence while remaining steadfast in the promotion and defence of democratic values and good governance.
‎
‎Dr. Mefor gave the advice on June 17 when the leadership of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), led by its President, Comrade Ochuba Chisom Samuel, paid him a courtesy visit at his office in the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.
‎
‎Speaking on governance and civic responsibility, the commissioner drew a distinction between civil rule and genuine democracy, describing democracy as a continuous process that thrives on active citizen participation, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.
‎

‎He cautioned against all forms of civilian dictatorship, stressing that democratic societies must uphold the right of citizens to freely elect and replace underperforming leaders through credible electoral processes.
‎
‎Dr. Mefor also warned students against what he termed “anywhere-belle-face politics,” where individuals compromise the collective good for immediate personal gains. He encouraged them to reject electoral inducements and instead leverage their collective influence to promote accountable leadership and safeguard democratic principles.
‎
‎The commissioner further reminded the students that participation in campus leadership should not undermine their academic pursuits. He urged them to strike a healthy balance between leadership responsibilities and their educational goals to ensure overall personal development.
‎
‎Earlier, the SUG President, Comrade Ochuba Chisom Samuel, speaking on behalf of the union’s leadership, congratulated Dr. Mefor on his reappointment as Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation under the Solution 2.0 administration. He commended the commissioner for his support towards student welfare and youth development in Anambra State.
‎
‎He also sought strategic collaboration with the ministry, particularly in the area of internship opportunities for students, especially those studying Mass Communication and Journalism. They noted that such partnerships would provide practical experience and enhance students’ professional competence and career readiness.
‎
‎The SUG leader, emphasized the need for sustainable collaboration between educational institutions and relevant government agencies to equip students with the skills and exposure required to excel in their chosen careers.
‎
‎Responding, Dr. Mefor welcomed the proposals and described the request for partnership as a positive development. He assured the students of the ministry’s willingness to collaborate with the university and support initiatives that advance students’ professional growth and development for the collective good.
