As the world observes the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, the Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, unity and responsible communication across all communities in the state.
The annual observance, marked on June 18, draws global attention to the dangers of hate speech and its negative impact on social cohesion, governance and sustainable development.
In a statement, the government warned that hate speech remains a serious threat to peaceful coexistence, particularly in diverse societies, calling for sustained public enlightenment and responsible communication platforms.
It noted that efforts are ongoing to strengthen public information systems and community engagement strategies aimed at reducing divisive rhetoric, misinformation and inflammatory messaging.
The statement highlighted initiatives to promote harmony among ethnic, religious and political groups, stressing that unity remains central to the state’s development agenda.
Relevant government agencies, it added, have been directed to intensify sensitization campaigns on responsible media use, especially among young people who are active on digital platforms.
The government also emphasized that promoting digital literacy and civic responsibility is essential to curbing online abuse, political incitement and ethnic profiling.
It reaffirmed that peaceful communication is vital to sustaining democracy, stability and development in Anambra State, particularly during politically sensitive periods.
The statement concluded that the government will continue to support initiatives that encourage tolerance, inclusion and constructive public dialogue in line with global best practices.
