The Mayor of Onitsha North LGA, Hon.Nweze Tony Nwora has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening primary healthcare in the area by backing the National Health Fellowship (NHF) programme and collaborating with its representatives to drive better health outcomes.
Mayor Nwora made the commitment in his office when he received Mrs. Uju Mkpuluma, the NHF representative for Onitsha North LGA, during a courtesy visit. The delegation included Hon. Chike Nwanosike, Supervisory Councillor for Health, and Mrs. Ezedinachi Elizabeth, Head of Department for Health in the council.

The meeting focused on introducing the NHF programme—which operates in all 774 local government areas nationwide—and exploring strategies for strengthening coordination among Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Onitsha North. The fellowship emphasises leadership development, data-driven decision-making, and youth-led innovations to tackle pressing community health challenges.
Mayor Nwora commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his significant investments in Anambra State’s healthcare sector. He highlighted the ongoing construction of five new general hospitals in the Anambra North Senatorial Zone, the upgrade of PHCs across the state’s 326 wards, the recruitment of 1,000 additional health personnel, and the provision of free antenatal services for expectant mothers.

“Our partnership with the National Health Fellowship will complement these state initiatives and ensure that quality healthcare reaches every ward in Onitsha North,” Mayor Nwora said. He assured that the local government would provide all necessary support to NHF fellows and collaborators to achieve measurable improvements in public health indicators.
Councillor Nwanosike and Mrs. Elizabeth expressed gratitude for the mayor’s backing, noting that effective local-government engagement is critical to the success of federal health programmes. The delegation left with a roadmap for joint action, including regular coordination meetings, data-sharing protocols, and community outreach plans to promote preventive care and health education.
With this renewed collaboration, stakeholders expect Onitsha North to make significant strides in areas such as maternal health, disease surveillance, and primary care access, aligning local efforts with the state’s broader vision for a healthier Anambra.
