The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) House of Assembly aspirant, and former Transition Committee Chairman Anambra West, Hon. Felix Ikechi (PhD), has called for improved welfare for Nigerian workers and a renewed commitment to purposeful leadership as the country marks the 2026 International Workers’ Day.
In a statement issued on Friday May 1, through his media office, Hon. Ikechi paid tribute to workers across Anambra West and Nigeria, describing them as the backbone of societal progress and economic development, commending their resilience and dedication despite prevailing challenges.
“Workers remain the engine that drives our communities and sustains our economy. Their sacrifices are invaluable and must never be taken for granted,” he said.
The aspirant, however, stressed that beyond celebration, Workers’ Day should serve as a moment for reflection and action, noting that Nigerian workers deserve fair wages, job security, and conducive working conditions that reflect their critical contributions to nation-building.
According to the former Anambra West Mayor, neglecting the welfare of workers poses a significant threat to sustainable development and social stability.
He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating policies that protect workers’ rights, empower local businesses, and create sustainable opportunities for economic growth in Anambra West. He emphasized the need for governance that prioritizes the people, particularly the working class.
Ikechi called on leaders at all levels to demonstrate accountability and adopt people-centered policies capable of improving the living standards of citizens.
“As we celebrate Workers’ Day, there is a need to renew our collective demand for leadership that is responsive, responsible, and committed to the welfare of the people,” he said.
Hon. Ikechi concluded by expressing optimism that with the right leadership and policies, Anambra West can become a model where hard work is duly recognized, rewarded, and uplifted.
The International Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1, honors the contributions of workers and highlights the importance of labor rights and social justice worldwide.
