The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, says the state government’s goal is to equip students with the education, skills and competencies needed to adapt to global digital transformation and future careers.

Ogugua stated this on Aug. 12 at the 2026 International Youth Day celebration organised by the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports in Awka.

He said education must go beyond conventional classroom learning, stressing the need to equip students with practical knowledge and digital skills to remain relevant in a rapidly changing global society.

According to him, technological transformation is creating new opportunities across sectors, making it imperative for schools to prepare students for digitalisation, innovation and emerging careers.

Ogugua said the state government was pursuing digital transformation in the education sector, adding that teachers must also be adequately prepared to deliver effectively in the changing educational environment.

He disclosed that another training exercise for teachers would be held from Aug. 24 to Sept. 2.

The commissioner said the state was also reviewing curriculum implementation to address local educational needs, while calling for stronger collaboration among the Ministries of Education, Youth Development and Sports and other stakeholders to promote meaningful youth inclusion.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Patrick Aghamba, said the theme of the celebration, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” reflected the diverse backgrounds of young people globally and their shared aspirations for opportunities, inclusion and progress.

Agha mba commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for prioritising youth empowerment, saying the governor recognised young people as the future of the state and remained committed to creating opportunities for them to develop their talents and contribute meaningfully to society.

He highlighted the One Youth, Two Skills initiative and other programmes designed to equip young people with practical skills, entrepreneurship opportunities and the capacity for economic independence and productivity.

The highlight of the celebration was a panel discussion involving the Commissioners for Education, Agriculture, Youth Development and Sports, Information and Value Reformation, as well as Special Advisers, who discussed their ministries’ policies, programmes and strategies for empowering young people.
