As the world marks the International Day of Older Persons, governments, health professionals and communities are renewing calls for greater support, protection and inclusion of older people in society.
Observed annually on October 1, the day provides an opportunity to recognise the contributions of older persons while drawing attention to the challenges they face, including poverty, social isolation, discrimination and limited access to healthcare.
Older people play important roles in families and communities, providing guidance, childcare, knowledge and valuable life experience. However, many continue to face barriers that can affect their quality of life and ability to participate fully in society.
Health experts stress the importance of ensuring that older persons have access to affordable healthcare, nutritious food, safe housing and social support. Regular health checks and early treatment of age-related conditions can also help older people remain active and independent.
In many communities, older persons also face loneliness, particularly when family members move away for work or other reasons. Strengthening community networks alnd creating opportunities for social participation can help reduce isolation and promote emotional wellbeing.
The observance also highlights the need to protect older people from neglect, abuse and financial exploitation. Families, communities and institutions have a shared responsibility to ensure that older persons are treated with respect and dignity.
As the world celebrates the contributions of older persons, the day serves as a reminder that ageing should not lead to exclusion. Building more inclusive communities requires policies and services that allow people to age safely, healthily and with dignity.
The International Day of Older Persons therefore calls for renewed commitment to valuing older people—not only for what they have contributed in the past, but also for the knowledge, experience and leadership they continue to bring to society.
